ADVENTURELAND
RYAN: After seeing the new movie “Adventureland,” I kinda wish I’d worked at a theme park during college.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ This movie did make it look sort of fun. But I think I would have liked working at an amusement park only if “Rock Me Amadeus” was blasted on a regular basis, as it is in this movie. I loved that it takes place in the ’80s.
RYAN: That was definitely one of the best parts. We grew up in that era so we could totally relate. They nailed the clothes, the hair and the expressions perfectly.
CAROLINE: How did you like your girl Kristen Stewart in this one?
RYAN: I loved her. I think it’s her best role to date. Don’t you agree?
CAROLINE: This was the perfect part for her. She does young adult angst very well. She played with her hair a lot throughout the film though, and it was almost like a nervous tic. I wish the director had made her stop.
RYAN: I’m afraid it’s something she does when she doesn’t know what to do with her hands, which is often. She looked great though. The guy who plays her love interest, Jesse Eisenberg, plays the same role he usually does; kind of the nerdy underdog.
CAROLINE: I think he’s a good actor, and was great in this role, but I don’t like looking at him. He’s not at all cute and he needs a haircut. But maybe they made him have that mop hairstyle because it took place in the ’80s. Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, is very hot.
RYAN: I hate to say it, but you’re right. I feel like he’s not even really that hot; he just works out a lot. One thing that disappointed me about this movie was the two SNL actors, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. We love Kristen so much, but she didn’t give us even one laugh.
CAROLINE: Well, she was barely in it. I couldn’t believe how little she and Bill Hader had to do in this movie. It was almost like why did they even bother casting such hilarious actors when they had such tiny roles?
RYAN: I’m so conditioned to laughing at Kristen that just looking at her makes me want to chuckle, even though she didn’t have any good moments here.
CAROLINE: I really enjoyed this movie though. I laughed several times, but also found it sweet and touching. It’s a real coming-of-age story and I think everyone will relate to at least one character. I actually liked the movie more and more as it went along.
RYAN: The screenplay is just terrific. It deals with issues of young romance and parental relationships in a very clever and entertaining way. There’s also an obligatory hot chick who was actually a good actress.
CAROLINE: I liked her. She was very cute but not in an obvious way. They really nailed all the “types” in this movie, and the casting was great.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: I really liked this movie. I think everyone who fondly remembers the ’80s will dig it. It’s smart, well written and well acted, so I’ll have to flat-out recommend it; though I will say it’s not a must-see on the big screen. You could wait to rent it.
CAROLINE: That’s true; it’s not like there are any special effects or anything that require a big screen viewing. But if you’re in your 20s or 30s, I would highly recommend seeing it. I think it has lots of laughs and a very cute, relatable story.
