New on DVD

CAROLINE: This year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, “Slumdog Millionaire,” is new on DVD today. If you haven’t seen it, you’ve probably been living under a rock.

RYAN: Well, it didn’t play in some of the smaller cities, so if you live in the boonies, you might have missed it. Now’s your chance to see the so-called movie of the year.

CAROLINE: I really liked it and found it charming and sweet, but I don’t think it was the best movie of 2008.

RYAN: I don’t either; but I saw it way after the hype so maybe my expectations were too high.

CAROLINE: Either way, it’s worth renting. It’s both touching and funny, and the ending is great. But be warned – it’s pretty violent at times too.

RYAN: Next up is Will Smith’s annual melodramatic offering, “Seven Pounds,” which neither of us saw.

CAROLINE: I actually kind of wanted to see this, but I heard terrible things about. I’m still somewhat intrigued though. It’s on my Netflix queue.

RYAN: It co-stars Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson and it’s something about Will Smith doing random good deeds for seven strangers because of some horrible thing he did. Sounds like a snoozer to me.

CAROLINE: I might check it out. It’s from the same director as “The Pursuit of Happyness,” which was OK. But it’s definitely not one of Will’s big hits.

RYAN: He should stick to action flicks.
