I LOVE YOU, MAN
RYAN: Not in recent history can I remember you being as excited for a movie as you have been for “I Love You, Man.”
CAROLINE: I really have, just because it’s so up my alley. It’s like a chick flick with a guy twist; so everyone can relate. Plus I love both Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. Ultimately, the movie wasn’t phenomenal but it was very cute and funny.
RYAN: I think it’s more of a flat-out comedy than a romantic comedy.
CAROLINE: Yeah, because the love story isn’t between Paul Rudd and his fiancée, it’s between him and his new guy friend. The first three minutes of the movie are freaking hilarious. The four of us who saw it together were all howling out loud.
RYAN: I laughed out loud consistently throughout, though there was a part in the middle that lagged a little. The movie’s premise walks a fine line with gender issues, and it could have been offensive, but it’s not. They did it the right way and it’s hilarious.
CAROLINE: I love the whole cast too. For me that’s what half the fun was. In addition to the two main guys, there’s Rashida Jones from “The Office” who I like; but she wasn’t as convincing in her role as some of the others were. She doesn’t stand out in this. I loved Jaime Pressly and Jon Favreau as a bickering married couple. There are several others you’ll recognize like Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, Jane Curtin and some guys from “The State,” and the great cast makes the movie all the more enjoyable.
RYAN: Rashida’s hair was a little flat, but she’s otherwise very cute. And Jason Segel is so good in this movie. It’s such a juicy role for him and he plays it effortlessly. And I think this is the best role of Paul Rudd’s career. He’s just so funny.
CAROLINE: I adore him. There are several scenes that are obviously ad-libbed, which just comes with having so many great comics in one movie. You can almost see the actors laughing; they were clearly having a great time making this. Overall, it was definitely a touch too long, but that’s often the case with movies like this.
RYAN: It’s not perfect, but I really enjoyed it and I’m gonna have to go ahead and recommend it. It’s very adult humor, and it has a Judd Apatow sensibility to it. I even wondered if he’d taken a pass at the script at one point, but he didn’t.
CAROLINE: It’s perfect for people in their 20s and 30s. For anyone who loves comedies, it’s a great one, especially with this cast. I wouldn’t go into it expecting anything Oscar worthy, but for a fun, cute, March movie, you can’t go wrong.
