TYLER PERRY’S MADEA GOES TO JAIL
RYAN: Since “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail” has been a box office juggernaut, I decided to do m’duty and check it the eff out.
CAROLINE: Is the F-bomb really necessary? How was it?
RYAN: It’s hard to say. Remember how we felt about his last move?
CAROLINE: “Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys”?
RYAN: Yes. Like how we thought it was not a dramedy but a movie with drama and comedy that was never quite cohesive?
CAROLINE: Right.
RYAN: This suffers from the same problem. When will Ty figure out how to make a good film already? I mean it’s nice for him and his loyal fans that he cranks these things out; they’re entertaining. But he could really step things up a notch on the writing and directing.
CAROLINE: Seriously. He writes, stars in, directs, produces, distributes… It’s like he’s not accountable to anyone else so he really doesn’t have to make brilliant movies.
RYAN: Someone needs to start regulating his work. If he wants us to take a pass at his scripts before he starts shooting in the future, we’d be more than happy to.
CAROLINE: Speak for yourself. So how was this version of Madea?
RYAN: Madea, herself, is actually brilliant and high-larious. I had wished that storyline was just the whole movie. It was the drama part of the film that really didn’t work.
CAROLINE: Wasn’t little Rudy Huxtable, Keshia Knight Pulliam, in it too? As a hooker, no less?
RYAN: Yes and she’s gorge as an adult, but her cap teeth are a little much – distracting. And BTW, Viola Davis has a sizable role.
CAROLINE: OMG – I loved her in “Doubt”! In five minutes she stole the show and garnered an Oscar nomination.
RYAN: She’s very good and holds up in this movie but is still weighed down by the drama in this film that comes across more campy than dramatic in a way.
CAROLINE: That’s too bad. In the words of Meryl Streep, someone needs to give Viola a movie!
RYAN: …and not Tyler Perry, evidently.
— BOTTOM LINE –
RYAN: It’s a very funny movie, particularly the Madea scenes. I’m a convert. This movie has made me a Madea fan, full stop. I love the way she mispronounces words, etc. Dr. Phil was really funny in his cameo too. I would like to see just Madea in the future. Note to Mr. Perry: Do dramas or comedies separately, please! You suck at dramedy.
