FIRED UP!
RYAN: I’m really sorry you couldn’t attend the press screening for “Fired Up!” with me because there were several times it made me laugh and I know we would have been laughing together.
CAROLINE: Obviously it’s a dumb February movie, but it does look kind of funny. I’m sure I would have chuckled along with you.
RYAN: It’s a teen cheerleading movie which is very similar to “Bring It On.” It actually has clips from “Bring It On” in it. The premise is silly and cliché – two high school football players go to cheerleading camp to try to pick up girls – but I had so much fun watching it. There are two gay characters who are also cliché but not offensive. Overall, the comedy really worked.
CAROLINE: Is anyone famous in it? I recognized a girl from the new “90210” in the trailer.
RYAN: There’s John Michael Higgins, who I loved on “Ally McBeal.”
CAROLINE: He’s hilarious. He was in “Yes Man” and “The Break Up” and a lot of the Christopher Guest mockumentaries.
RYAN: He’s fabulous in this movie as a closeted gay man. He’s the head instructor at the cheerleading camp and he’s married to Molly Sims.
RYAN: Yeah, it’s brilliant; every time she kisses him, he smiles and then wipes his mouth. The soundtrack is also great. Lots of fun, cheesy ’80s and ’90s music from Chumbawamba and such. The kids in the movie are all gorgeous,
CAROLINE: Of course.
RYAN: But since there are so many remakes these days of horror movies and teen comedies, it’s nice to see a fresh, one that works.
CAROLINE: Did it make you LOL?
RYAN: A few times. I didn’t laugh a ton but I definitely laughed more than anyone else there.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: Ok, look… it’s not a movie that’s going to change you. There’s nothing crazy brilliant about it. But for what it is, it exceeded my expectations and for the hour and a half I was stuck in the theater watching it, I completely loved it. It’s a movie for the girls, gays, teens and anyone else who likes to revert a bit every once in a while.
