REVOLUTIONARY ROAD

CAROLINE: I have waited for months for you to see “Revolutionary Road” and I just can’t take it anymore. I have to come to terms with the fact that you’re not gonna see it. Hence we’re reviewing it now. Or at least, I am.

RYAN: I really regret that I still haven’t motivated to see it. I always planned to, but I can’t seem to get it together; especially given that it didn’t get any Oscar noms, aside from Best Supporting Actor for a guy no one’s heard of.

CAROLINE: I can’t say I blame you since it’s not a great movie. It is, however, the first reunion of Kate and Leo since “Titanic,” so if that doesn’t make you want to see it, then I don’t know what.

RYAN: I’m curious, of course; but after hearing you talk about it lately, I can’t say I’m dying to see it.

CAROLINE: The only reason to see it is for the acting. Obviously, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are amazing. The supporting cast is great too, especially Michael Shannon whose creepy and all-too-real role earned him the Oscar nom. As for the movie itself, the plot sucked.

RYAN: That’s not good.

CAROLINE: I just kept waiting for something to happen for the entire movie. It’s basically “Desperate Housewives” meets “Little Children” meets “American Beauty,” which is another film by the same director, but set in the ’50s. I’ve seen it all before. Maybe Sam Mendes only knows how to makes movies about suburban malaise.

RYAN: See, that’s what I’m talking about. Your description doesn’t make me want to see it. It doesn’t sound like a must-see in the theater.

CAROLINE: You could definitely wait till it’s on DVD. It’s a very slow-paced movie about marriage and life in the ‘burbs, and I couldn’t believe how little plot there was. Something big happens at the end; but until then, it’s a whole lotta nothing.

RYAN: Sometimes I can appreciate a slow burn, but when a movie is supposed to be a big Oscar contender, I would expect a lot more drama.

CAROLINE: Exactly. That’s what I was hoping for, especially because there was so much buzz around this movie last year. I really thought it was going to be one of the best films of the year, and it really let me down. I don’t mean to dis it too hard though, because the acting really was phenomenal. I just expected more story.

RYAN: Was there any payoff in seeing the two “Titanic” co-stars reunite?

CAROLINE: Well, there’s one scene that’s very reminiscent of the fogged up window palm print scene from “Titanic,” which was fun. And it’s cool to see Kate and Leo now that they’re a little bit older. They have great chemistry, but unfortunately not so great material to work with in this movie.

RYAN: They’re really good friends in real life, as we know, so that’s fun to know as you watch. But it sounds like you wish the script had been better.

CAROLINE: It’s based on a book which is supposedly really good. But maybe they should have just let it be a book.

— BOTTOM LINE —

CAROLINE: This movie disappointed me. I liked the acting a lot, and it was shot very well, but the story didn’t deliver. Not enough action. It’s not a big shock to me that it was basically dissed for the Academy Awards nominations.

Thanks For Viewing The REVOLUTIONARY ROAD

I haven’t seen this either, but I will say that this is one of my favorite books and I think the suburban malaise thing was brand new when this book was written. So the movie is old news because of all of those other Ice Storm, America Beauty ect movies. But all those started with this book, I think. So in that way, it’s been done but it is also original. But really, Leo and Kate are miscast for this if you do read the book you see they don’t really physically match the characters–even though they are both great actors. I also heard a great thing on NPR about how Sam Mendes is a great director, but a poor fit for this story, and I agree. I hope this isn’t too long and annoying. I love weseemovies.com!
