UNDER THE SEA 3D

RYAN: Seeing “Under the Sea 3D” at the IMAX theater is something I will never forget.

CAROLINE: It’s a G-rated Discovery Channel-type movie, which is honestly more like a TV show because it’s only 40 minutes long. But the 3D IMAX element makes it so much more.

RYAN: The 3D technology is so incredible nowadays that I didn’t even feel like I was watching a movie. I felt like the sea creatures were actually touching me. I almost couldn’t look at the screen.

CAROLINE: I seriously felt I was scuba diving!! You’re practically in and among the coral playing with the fish. It was so cool. It’s very kid-oriented though, so they kept it very light – no sea lions getting eaten by sharks or anything. But I was totally into it regardless. I haven’t seen an IMAX movie in a while, and you really feel like you’re part of the film.

RYAN: The color in the movie is remarkable. I just can’t believe that coral like that exists in nature. You’ve never seen anything like it. And there are some species of fish that I didn’t even know existed! I’d never seen anything like those sea dragons before. They were exquisite.

CAROLINE: I felt like I learned something too. I never knew that sea turtles like to snack on jellyfish, for example. There was a slightly Al Gore-esque political message at the end that I could have done without; but other than that, I really liked it.

RYAN: I read in the notes that the director really wanted to convey the message that we need to protect our animals for future generations and that animals are going extinct due to climate change.

CAROLINE: I know, but I was like, “Can’t we just watch the animals play without getting all heavy and serious about the environment?” Jim Carrey is the narrator, by the way, and he’s a little dull. Not your typical Jim Carrey.

RYAN: He seemed too relaxed. I loved the score though. And I just couldn’t get enough of the sea lions. They are so cute, almost like puppies. I wanted to reach out and pet them.

CAROLINE: Luckily for the cameramen, the sea lions were very interested in the cameras so they got up really close. They’re adorable.

RYAN: I actually teared up at the end.

CAROLINE: You did not!

RYAN: I couldn’t help myself. The music was so pretty and the sea lions were so cute that I got emotional.

CAROLINE: Wow. Even I’m not that sappy.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: If this movie is playing near you, get out and see it. I think it’s only playing in IMAX theaters, so if there’s one near your town, don’t miss it. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

CAROLINE: I don’t see how you couldn’t enjoy this movie. The cinematography is amazing, and it’s just so cool. I almost didn’t even need the narration. I could have just watched the sea creatures for hours.
