MUSIC AND LYRICS
RYAN: Thanks to the gorgeous Ella at Warner Bros. for treating us to this special advanced screening of “Music and Lyrics.”
CAROLINE: Starring Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant. And the tall guy from “Everybody Loves Raymond,” which is a show I have not watched once.
RYAN: He’s the tallest man alive. And the tallness continued with Kristen Johnston.
CAROLINE: She was a riot. She might have been the funniest thing about this movie.
RYAN: She was definitely a scene stealer.
CAROLINE: All in all, this movie was fine, but not great. The sad truth is that Hugh and Drew have zero chemistry.
RYAN: I disagree on both points. I liked this movie. I partly agree that they didn’t have chemistry, but it got better as the film went on. By three-quarters of the way through, which was too late, they did have a cute scene on the street where I felt some sparks. And by the end, they totally had chemistry.
CAROLINE: It’s interesting to hear you say that since you got up to pee and missed the whole ending. But by the final scene, I agree – there was some cuteness there, and I finally believed they could be a couple.
RYAN: Hugh Grant has a partial nudity scene. He’s shirtless and it looks like he’s been working out with a personal trainer.
CAROLINE: He’s hairless too.
RYAN: So he’s got a personal trainer and a waxer.
CAROLINE: Meanwhilst, Drew Barrymore was very unkempt in this movie. It looked like she hadn’t run a comb through her hair in months.
RYAN: And I’m sorry, but her lopsided mouth was worse in this movie than I’ve ever seen it before.
CAROLINE: That didn’t bother me ‘cos I think she’s cute as a button. But she had a couple of scenes of egregious bad acting. I was sad about that. But maybe it was bad writing and not her fault.
RYAN: She’s still one of my faves.
CAROLINE: By the by, the girl who plays the pop star in this movie is so not believable as a pop star.
RYAN: She had no personality. She was soulless.
CAROLINE: Totally. She had no charisma. She could sort of belly dance a little bit, but that was it.
RYAN: She was supposed to be Britney meets Christina meets Shakira, but she couldn’t hold a candle to any of them.
CAROLINE: Bottom line?
RYAN: This is the perfect Valentine’s Day movie. It’s a short ninety-eight minutes. It’s a little cliché and trite, but it’s thoroughly enjoyable and sweet. And it’s like a musical because there’s tons of singing in it. And Drew and Hugh both do their own singing.
CAROLINE: Who knew Hugh Grant could sing decently?
RYAN: They both sounded great.
CAROLINE: The songs in this movie are definitely catchy and I will be singing them in my head as I fall asleep. Howe’er, I wanted to like this movie more than I did. Which is not to say that I hated it – I just felt myself feeling disappointed that I wasn’t liking it as much I’d hoped to.
RYAN: Pop goes my heart.
