MY BEST FRIEND’S GIRL
RYAN: I just wanna sing “My Best Friend’s Girl” all day since it was playing during the credits of this movie.
CAROLINE: It’s a great song and it appears several times throughout the film, which I liked. Just so you know what kind of movie you’re getting here, this was directed by the same guy who did “Pretty in Pink” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.”
RYAN: It’s a little more adult than those two ’80s delights though.
CAROLINE: I’m just gonna go ahead and say it: Dane Cook is hot.
RYAN: I disagreed with you on that for the longest time, and even at the beginning of this movie, I was thinking, “He’s so not hot.” But by the end, I had to admit you were right.
CAROLINE: He’s ruggedly good-looking in a pockmarked way.
RYAN: His body is unbelievable. I’ve almost never seen anything like it in my life, and you get to see most of it in this movie, back to front. He’s in incredible shape.
CAROLINE: I didn’t realize he was so into his fitness, but he clearly is. He’s got a six-pack and those hot lower ab muscles on his hips. I don’t know much about his stand-up act, but I know he has a lot of haters as well as legions of fans. I’m for sure gonna count myself as a fan of his body of work – pun intended.
RYAN: I second that. I’m aboard the Dane Cook train. Though we did see this movie for free at a courtesy screening, it did not screen in advance for critics, which usually that signifies that the film isn’t great. Our expectations were pretty low, but I thought it was really good. We both laughed out loud several times, and it’s entertaining and cute.
CAROLINE: It’s incredibly raunchy though. I was almost a little shocked, and I have a high threshold for that kind of stuff. You just don’t usually hear people talking so profanely, even in R-rated movies. But it’s very true to how friends talk in real life. Plus Dane Cook’s character is supposed to be an a**hole, so it works.
RYAN: It’s just as crass as “Superbad,” and I’m sure some people will find it offensive; those people shouldn’t see this movie. We were able to see the humor in it, of course.
CAROLINE: Kate Hudson is adorable as always. She’s almost as flat chested as Keira Knightley though.
RYAN: I think more so. But she has such a cute factor and likability. This is one of her better romantic comedies in recent years, though I felt like she wasn’t even in the movie all that much.
CAROLINE: Well, it’s just as much about the relationship between Dane Cook and his best friend, Jason Biggs, as it is a romantic triangle between the three. It’s a bromantic comedy. It’s about love and friendship and relationships and trying to be a good guy, which is Dane Cook’s struggle. And I’m sorry, but Jason Biggs is just not that cute.
RYAN: He’s good in this though. And Alec Baldwin is amazing as Dane Cook’s dad. He goes even further than he does on “30 Rock.” He is to this movie what Tom Cruise was to “Tropic Thunder.” I could almost see him getting a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.
CAROLINE: He’s barely in the movie! It’s almost a cameo, honestly. But the things that fly out of his mouth are so raunchy it’s hilarious. And he has that fabulous deadpan delivery which is always funny no matter what scenario he’s in. This movie’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s quite funny. Bottom line?
RYAN: I enjoyed this movie, and I think anyone who likes romantic comedies and can handle the very adult themes will like it. It wraps up nicely and it’s not too long. The timing was good.
CAROLINE: It’s a little longer than you’re average rom com, but that didn’t bother me. Dane Cook has a lot of funny catch phrases which reminded me of the way we talk sometimes. The ending is a little improbable, but it’s a movie so you can take it with a grain of salt. I think fans of Kate Hudson and Dane Cook won’t be disappointed.
