New on DVD
CAROLINE: There are a bunch of new movies on DVD today; some good, some bad, some really bad. My personal favorite is “Made of Honor” starring Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan.
CAROLINE: I know! It’s such a chick flick and so utterly predictable, but I couldn’t get enough of it. I laughed, I cried, I adored every minute. It’s definitely worth renting if you love a cheesy chick movie.
RYAN: I enjoyed it too though not quite like you did. Patrick Dempsey definitely knows his audience.
CAROLINE: This movie also contains Sydney Pollack’s final performance before he died. He plays McDreamy’s dad who’s a sugar daddy on his fifth marriage or something. He’s hilarious.
RYAN: Also in the “good” category, there’s a very sweet documentary, “Young @ Heart,” new on DVD today. It’s about a senior citizens’ choir that sings contemporary music.
CAROLINE: This movie almost made me cry too, and it’s very cute to see how excited the old folks get about singing. Being in this choir really gives them a reason to live.
RYAN: There are hilarious music videos that they made interspersed throughout the movie too.
CAROLINE: If you like documentaries, this is a great rental.
RYAN: Now for the bad: “Speed Racer.” This movie was a major disappointment.
CAROLINE: Totally. Not that I expected much from it, because it was aimed at kids; but I seriously thought the Wachowski siblings were better than this.
RYAN: There were a couple of cool scenes of car races and fight sequences, but overall the movie’s just way too long. It didn’t deliver.
CAROLINE: Finally, that Al Pacino serial killer movie “88 Minutes” is new on DVD today. It was merely so-so.
RYAN: I missed this one. Should I rent it?
CAROLINE: Only if you want to see Alicia Witt, ‘cuz I know you like her. It starts out OK, but then gets more and more preposterous as it goes along. And Al has a strange bouffant hairdo throughout.
RYAN: I think I’ll skip it.
