THE BABYSITTERS
RYAN: Seeing “The Babysitters” made me all excited. It’s soooo good!
CAROLINE: Unfortunately, it’s a small, artsy film so not many people are going to be able to see it.
RYAN: This movie is so up my alley. It’s a gritty, intense, twisty, serious film that I just loved.
CAROLINE: It’s like a way R-rated after-school special. It’s a cautionary tale about babysitters who turn tricks.
RYAN: I’m excited about this movie in the same way that I was about “Little Children.” It’s not as well made, but it gives you the same kind of feeling.
CAROLINE: It’s got three well-known actors in it: Cynthia Nixon, John Leguizamo and Denis O’Hare. The rest are pretty much unknowns, although the lead girl is Sam Waterston’s daughter.
RYAN: John Leguizamo is looking very hot by the way. I’ve never been this attracted to him before. I loved him playing gay in that Ed Burns film, and this is another outstanding performance for him.
CAROLINE: He’s so short I usually don’t give him a second look, but it was strange how hot he looked in this movie. Cynthia Nixon’s hair was sadly stringy though.
RYAN: Cindy Nixon was so good in this movie. She’s such a natural actress.
CAROLINE: I’ve always thought she’s the best actress on “Sex and the City.” Her hair was just kinda unfortunate in this movie.
RYAN: It didn’t bother me. This movie certainly isn’t Best Picture nom caliber or anything, but it’s really well made. The lead girl looks like a tall Anna Paquin.
CAROLINE: I don’t really see that, but she is very tall. It was almost off-putting. And I loved the girl who played her best friend. She was such a wench it was fabulous. And she’s very short so they looked very funny together walking down the halls of the school.
RYAN: OMG Lauren Birkell gave one of the best performances of any young actress I’ve seen. I want to see her co-star as Ellen Page’s sister in something.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ I just love how the movie shows how something seemingly innocent, albeit kinda tawdry, can spiral out of control so fast.
RYAN: I’m always happy when I’m surprised in a film, and there were several things I thought I saw coming but then something totally different happened. This movie has a lot of brilliant moments.
CAROLINE: And the end is devastating. This really brought me back to my high school days – not that I was involved in prostitution of any kind mind you. But it just makes you realize how easily young girls can get in way over their heads. It was really disturbing. Bottom line?
RYAN: I recommend this wholeheartedly to anyone over the age of 18.
CAROLINE: It’s a really interesting commentary about what goes on in the suburbs in today’s world. I wouldn’t be surprised if this very thing was happening in high schools around the country. I just don’t wanna know about it.
RYAN: I think high school and college kids will eat this movie up.
CAROLINE: It’ll probably give them ideas!
RYAN: I know, but I’m telling you I was shocked, appalled and totally turned on all at the same time.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ Me too.
