WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS

RYAN: I predict that “What Happens in Vegas” will be an instant classic romantic comedy for this generation the way “When Harry Met Sally” was for us.

CAROLINE: [gasp’ I scoff at that notion. To compare these two movies is borderline blasphemous. “What Happens in Vegas” is merely cute and mildly amusing, but nowhere near the caliber of a classic like “When Harry Met Sally.”

RYAN: What I loved best about it is that even though you know exactly how it’s going to end, it’s how they get to that ending that’s so enjoyable and delightful and funny. I loved it.

CAROLINE: I definitely liked it and I really like Cameron Diaz, though I have to say she’s getting a little long in the tooth for roles like this. She looks amazing, but girlfriend is pushing her late 30s and these goofy singleton roles she keeps playing are getting tired.

RYAN: She does look about twice the age of Ashton in this movie, and even though I don’t love either of these actors, I loved them both in this movie. I can’t figure out why.

CAROLINE: I’m lukewarm on Ashton. I admire his success, but he’s basically just a goofball and I couldn’t get past that in this movie. I didn’t necessarily buy his transformation from manchild to mensch.

RYAN: Their chemistry was just so palpable that I couldn’t wait for them to kiss. And I laughed out loud more in this movie than I do in most regular comedies. I was constantly smiling, as was my friend Jared, who I saw the movie with. We were both so surprised at how much we loved this movie. And even though it’s a story of a straight couple, there’s something extremely gay about it.

CAROLINE: Whatever does that mean?

RYAN: It’s very gay friendly. There’s lots of gay innuendo and humor that isn’t at all offensive. And LBH, Queen Latifah’s in it.

CAROLINE: [laughs’ I’m not touching that one. Dennis Miller was quite funny as the judge.

RYAN: And he makes a great point in the movie about how we don’t want gay people to get married in this country but it’s actually straight people who are screwing up the sanctity of marriage.

CAROLINE: Yeah, I liked that. After seeing the trailer, I was wondering how they were going to convince me that a judge would force Cameron and Ashton to work on their impromptu Vegas marriage, but it really worked with Dennis Miller’s logic. It kind of harkens back to Britney Spears’s Vegas marriage and subsequent annulment. If that’s not making a farce of marriage, then I don’t know what.

RYAN: Exactly.

CAROLINE: Lake Bell plays Cammy Diaz’s BFF, and I know you’re a big fan. What did you think of her?

RYAN: I was laughing out loud at all of her lines. She was awesome; this was the perfect role for her.

CAROLINE: I have mixed feelings about this Rob Corddry, who plays Ashton’s lawyer/friend. We just saw him in “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” and I thought he was unfunny in that, which doesn’t say much because it was a bad movie. But he wasn’t that great in this either. He’s just not appealing to me.

RYAN: He’s kind of nerdy and he seemed too old to be playing Ashton’s best friend. He’s bald. He does nothing for me.

CAROLINE: I guess I didn’t love this movie enough to justify all of its implausibilities. Obviously, it’s a Hollywood romantic comedy and things happen in it that would never happen in real life, which I’m OK with. But in this movie, the unrealistic stuff annoyed me.

RYAN: I wasn’t annoyed in the least. I’m gonna go ahead and say that this is my favorite romantic comedy in the last few years. Bottom line?

CAROLINE: It’s a cute movie, and I loved the Vegas scenes. I just felt like some of the comedy was trying too hard. It felt forced to me. I laughed a few times, and I loved Cameron, but I didn’t always buy the humor. I felt like they were forcing out the lines, especially Lake Bell. She looked hot though. So overall, I liked it, but I didn’t love it.

RYAN: I want to call it the perfect movie, even though it’s not. I sincerely believe it’s the best romantic comedy in years. I loved it and I think everyone else will too.

When Lake Bell says to Rob Corddry, “I’m killing you with my brain,” I about peed. It was a very cute movie and my date was even hotter ;o) That always helps. Good review!
