SON OF RAMBOW
RYAN: “Son of Rambow” is one of my favorite films of the year thus far. I really can’t say enough good things about it.
CAROLINE: I didn’t like it quite that much, but it’s very funny and sweet. It’s a quirky British flick.
RYAN: Even though it’s about kids, it’s not really a kids’ movie. It’s got great special effects, not in a high tech way, but in an endearing way. It’s very imaginative and almost like a fantasy. Basically it’s a junior high school coming-of-age movie that I totally related to despite never having been in a strict religious sect.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ Yes, you were not part of the Brethren last time I checked. The two lead boys are so funny and cute. But it’s such an offbeat film that it’s almost hard to describe.
RYAN: It reminded me a tiny bit of Harry Potter, probably just because of the kids’ uniforms and their British accents. There were also some elements of “Mean Girls” with all the bullying.
CAROLINE: But in the most British of ways. I’m almost at a loss for words on this movie because it’s pretty wacky. It takes place in the ‘80s, and these two little boys fancy themselves Rambo so they try to make their own version of “First Blood.”
RYAN: They’re guerrilla filmmakers. And the movie is shot so beautifully and framed so well. It’s really well made overall. The music is great too – very ‘80s.
CAROLINE: I loved the ‘80s aspect! The music and clothes were so great. You’ll hear the Cars, the Cure and many others. It’ll take you right back to the early ‘80s when you first heard of Rambo.
RYAN: It’s definitely an indie though, so it’s not for everyone.
CAROLINE: Bottom line?
RYAN: I loved this movie and I recommend it wholeheartedly. It’s a good one for the big screen because of the scope and the imagination of it.
CAROLINE: I don’t know; it’s a cute movie, but I’d say it’s a rental at best. I don’t think you need to shell out 11 bucks to see it.
RYAN: But if you’re a lover of independent film, you won’t mind spending the money.
CAROLINE: True. It’s so clever and unique. All I knew about it going in was that it’s about two kids who were influenced by Rambo. I couldn’t imagine what that would be like, but it turned out to be laugh-out-loud funny, sweet and really fun to watch.
