JUMPER
RYAN: I was truly anticipating the release of the sci-fi movie, “Jumper,” featuring Hayden Christensen of “Star Wars” sequels fame and a white-hot, white-haired Samuel L. Jackson.
CAROLINE: I wasn’t all that psyched for it, but now that I’ve seen it, I’m on the bandwagon. It’s a really fun movie.
RYAN: I might even go so far as to say I loved this movie. But I may be even more in love with the fact that you enjoyed it, since you’re not traditionally that into sci-fi films.
CAROLINE: And even if you hate this movie, it’s only 88 minutes long, so you’ll be fine. For the first half hour, I was like, “OK this is decent.” And then it got into some really cool action, and I loved it when Jamie Bell arrived. He’s fabulous.
RYAN: He was little “Billy Elliot,” and he’s got a great accent. Close your eyes and he sounds like a young Ewan McGregor. Watch for him over the next 10 years. Overall, the cast is great; Rachel Bilson does a really good job. Diane Lane is also in it, as is Kristen Stewart, who I adored as Jodie Foster’s daughter in “Panic Room,” but blink and you’ll miss her in this. And finally, it’s got the little girl who played Violet in the Johnny Depp version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
CAROLINE: We saw “Jumper” at a screening with a bunch of stodgy critics who didn’t seem to love it. They were laughing at it, not with it, which annoyed me because I thought it was really fun and I think the kids are gonna love it. The premise is so great. I don’t think I fully realized how cool the whole teleportation thing was until I saw the movie. Great editing.
RYAN: Totally, and the special effects are terrific. The movie is almost a parallel to a vampire tale, or a superhero movie. It’s like a modern-day vampire story, minus the bloodsucking of course. But the guy has these supernatural powers that he doesn’t really know what to do with, and then another guy comes in to teach him and they join forces. It’s very “Interview with the Vampire.”
CAROLINE: The only thing that annoyed me was that Rachel Bilson’s whole role was basically her going, “Oh my God! Won’t you just tell me what’s going on? I don’t understand!” She plays a damsel in distress and not much else.
RYAN: But she looked good doing it. This movie also has the longest opening credit sequence of any film in history. And you love to hate Sam Jackson in this, though I wish they would have explained why his hair was stark white.
CAROLINE: He’s not particularly old in the film. Maybe he just thinks it’s a funky look. Bottom line?
RYAN: “Jumper” is a great sci-fi/almost superhero film. It’s very entertaining. Hayden Christensen isn’t on my list; but during this movie, for the first time ever, I thought he was hot-ish.
CAROLINE: He’s not the greatest actor, but this is a really cool movie, and I really think it’s going to do well. I know all the critics will pan it, but I think the kids will come out in droves to see it.
RYAN: Some of the lines are a little cheesy, but really they’re more naff than cheese.

it was a wise move for the makers of Jumper to keep Christensen’s lines as brief as possible. it had some great effects as well, made me feel like i was jumping around with the characters myself.
