THE ORPHANAGE
RYAN: We’ve just seen what I’m hoping will be this year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, “The Orphanage.”

RYAN: The performances are great, it’s really well written and given that it’s a first time director, I’m amazed at how great this movie was. It’s a good, spooky haunted house story and there’s sort of a mystery that you’re trying to figure out. It moves really well too.
CAROLINE: Definitely. At no point were we like, “Ok, let’s wrap it up.” It’s got the creepy kid factor too, as well as several jump-in-your-seat moments. I gasped out loud several times and I think I grabbed your leg really hard once. Sorry about that.
RYAN: You did, but believe me I was jumping myself. As soon as the music takes a turn toward the creepy, you know to brace yourself. Overall this movie is just really well done from the sub-titles to the music to the setting. If you can stomach a foreign film and sub-titles, then this is one to see.
CAROLINE: The lead woman is Belén Rueda who was in “The Sea Inside” with Javier Bardem, and she gives a really amazing, quite tough performance. It’s shot in an unusual part of Spain that doesn’t often appear in films, so that was cool too.
RYAN: Bottom line?
CAROLINE: If you like foreign films, you won’t want to miss this, and even if you don’t, it’s still a great thriller.
RYAN: Totally. I really loved this movie. And it’s produced by Guillermo del Toro who did “Pan’s Labyrinth” last year, so you know it’s got to be good.
