CHILDREN OF MEN
RYAN: Oh my! Alfonso Cuaron, you’ve done it again! You are my lovah for this amazing film, “Children of Men.”
CAROLINE: I wouldn’t call it an amazing film. Though I did enjoy it.
RYAN: What!?!? It was a huge production war-like movie.
CAROLINE: Yeah.
RYAN: It co-starred Aunt Marge from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” Clearly, Alfonso likes directing that actress. Her name is Pam Ferris and she rocked out in this.
CAROLINE: Yes, she was good.
RYAN: And is had cinematography reminiscent of Cuaron’s “Potter” installment.
CAROLINE: The camerawork is really phenomenal and really… raw, if you will. It definitely worked with the tone of the film which is bleak, to say the least.
RYAN: I’m just shocked it didn’t get any major Golden Globe nominations. It’s one of the year’s best films.
CAROLINE: I don’t know if I agree with that. The ending was very abrupt. I liked it but I didn’t think it was a great movie.
RYAN: My favorite part of the movie is that Julianne Moore is only in it for five minutes.
CAROLINE: (laughs) I loved that too ‘cos she is boe-ring these days.
RYAN: And funny her name is Julianne and in this her character’s name is Julian.
CAROLINE: My boyfriend, Clive Owen, is hot as always.
RYAN: Soooo hot.
CAROLINE: I love his wrinkles, his whiskers… my boyfriend’s always, always lookin’ good to me. But be forewarned, this definitely not a movie for the faint of heart. It is definitely worthy of it’s “R” rating. There is profane language and lots o’ violence.
RYAN: I was shocked at moments buy the intensity of the film. There are times you cannot help but lean forward in your seat. We were joined by my friend MJ, who put it best, “You’re not a spectator in this film. You really feel like you’re in it.” You are touched by this movie. Part of the reason may be because it wasn’t shot in widescreen – unique for today’s movies.
CAROLINE: It feels like a twisted Six Flags ride at times.
RYAN: Well said, Carole Ann. Is it worth a second mention how hot Clive Owen is?
CAROLINE: (chuckles) He was great, as always. The acting overall is good.
RYAN: Michael Caine was fab!
CAROLINE: It’s a wacky romp for him as sort of a nut-bag character.
RYAN: Mmm hmm.
CAROLINE: But it’s a tense movie. And uncomfortable.
RYAN: Not in a bad way. It’s riveting. We go to movies to be entertained and transported to different worlds and this film accomplishes both goals gloriously.
CAROLINE: Transported to an apocalyptic world, which isn’t necessarily where everyone wants to go.
RYAN: Right. But I liked it better than a real war film, or say, “Apocalypse Now” because there’s more of a story to someone like me to connect to.
CAROLINE: Totally. War movies can get very boring and this is more of a futuristic, interesting… probably not entirely improbable…
RYAN: Frighteningly. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: Liked it; didn’t love it. However, given that Clive’s in it, I knew I would see it no matter what. And it’s a very pleasant hour and forty-five minutes which we always enjoy.
RYAN: It’s brilliant. One of the best films of the year. I’d love to see it get an Oscar nom, especially for Alfonso, who’s becoming my favorite director. Sorry Mr. Zemeckis.
