THE SAVAGES
CAROLINE: You, Ryan, weren’t that psyched to see “The Savages” because you thought it looked depressing. I, on the other hand, was rather excited for it, so I went by my lonesome this weekend at New York’s Angelika Film Center. And I’ll
have you know that I paid $11.75!! Ticket prices have gone up again in NYC – it was an outrage.
RYAN: I warned you! Some places are charging 12 bucks now. So are you glad you saw it? Or do you wish you could get that two hours of your life back?
CAROLINE: No, no, it’s great little movie made by the same director who did “The Slums of Beverly Hills.” And LBH, I’ll see just about anything with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney. They play bro and sis in this one.
RYAN: I do love Laura Linney, but the trailer of this movie just looked kind of boring and annoying to me.
CAROLINE: Seriously? I thought it looked great, and it was. Philip Seymour Hoffman has some hilarious one-liners and there are actually several laugh-out-loud moments during the movie.
RYAN: Well, you wouldn’t know that from the trailer. It looks like a serious drama.
CAROLINE: It is serious, given that it’s about their father who’s going senile, but the human drama can be quite funny.
RYAN: So who’s better, L. Lin or Phil Ho?
CAROLINE: They’re both great, but I really think that Philip Seymour Hoffman is the best actor of our time, or at least one of. Laura Linney’s character is a little bit hateable, which she’s so good at.
RYAN: Bottom line?
CAROLINE: It’s a good little movie with great performances, but it’s definitely a heavy topic. But it’s also a very natural movie with a lot of scenes that are very true-to-life. There are laughs, but most of them are uncomfortable laughs. I enjoyed a lot, but it’s a small-ish film that’s never going to see wide release. It could definitely be a rental.
RYAN: GTK, good to know.
