The Forger Review

The ForgerRYANThe Forger is a new crime drama starring John Travolta, opening soon in limited release but available now as digital download.  I watched it on iTunes and quite liked it.

CAROLINE: It’s crazy how many movies are made and the politics behind their distribution.  It seems more and more movies are available online before or even the same day as when they open in theaters, in some cases.

RYAN: It’s true.  As with music, the internet is affecting the film industry as well; every industry, really.

CAROLINE: So you liked it.  Did John mispronounce anyone’s name?

RYAN: Ha. Thankfully, no.  He was very good.  It’s like a more emotional kind of Taken movie.  It’s really about a father/son relationship and it’s not often you see that portrayed between an ex-con and his son.

CAROLINE: That does sound unique.  Anyone else noteworthy in it?

RYAN: Yes – Christopher Plummer plays John’s dad and he’s always great.  You really buy these guys, spanning three generations as a family.  And because they’re good actors, you care about them.  John plays a criminal, or maybe reformed criminal, but you still really root for him.

CAROLINE: Any chicks in it?

RYAN: Abigail Spencer is – whom I remember from a bit part in the opening Kansas scenes of Oz the Great and Powerful.

CAROLINE: Of course you do.  She’s also on TV’s Suits, among other things.

RYAN: I like her.  It takes place in Boston and there are some light accents but nothing over the top.  The pacing is very good.  It’s really a drama but has some suspense to it and could quality at moments as a mystery, action or thriller.  But at the heart of it all are the relationships.

CAROLINE: Any particular subplots?

RYAN: Nothing heavy.  There’s the connection that John’s character has being an ex-con and there’s an art heist  storyline too which is good.

CAROLINE: Why is is called The Forger?

RYAN: He was in prison for forging art.

CAROLINE: Ah.

RYAN: It’s not a bad option as a rental.  If you like John Travolta, or are in the mood for a drama featuring a unique parenting relationship – this is nice entertainment.
