Maps to the Stars Review

Maps StarsRYAN: This film has a killer cast is available now for digital download.  I watched it this week via iTunes and really liked it.  It’s not an easy movie.  It’s vulgar and disturbing but you know how I roll.

CAROLINE: (laughs) Yeah, right.  How was it vulgar?

RYAN: Without giving anything away, this movie is actually more risqué and showy than Fifty Shades of Grey was.

CAROLINE: That’s crazy and unexpected.  Is it the same kind of film?  Does it cover the same kind of topic?

RYAN: Not at all but some of the themes are more shocking than what was in Fifty.  I like movies that are disturbing but more-so when they’re about regular people.  This film is about a bunch for crazy people in Hollywood; fascinating and interesting but none of them relatable.  Carrie Fisher makes has a cameo as herself, if that’s any indication of the level of cray these people are.

CAROLINE: (laughs) Well that certainly paints a picture.  How is Julianne?

RYAN: Incredible – she creates such a tortured picture of a has been actress in the shadow of her mother’s career.  This just in, she’s really good.  It’s also one of Mia Wasikowska’s best performances.  She’s had such an amazing career if you think about it.  She’s not that famous and she gets leading roles but she’s really a character actor.

CAROLINE: Yeah she’s having an insane career and yet she stays out of all the rags.  What about R. Pats?

RYAN: He’s fine.  He’s not in it very much but he does a good Amer-accent.  John Cusack is also good.  It’s a great cast but the material is so juicy.  The script is a bit confusing to start.  You’re thrown into everything without any explanation and you have to figure it out as the movie goes along.  It appears to be about separate stories but then they’re all connected and it’s really creepy.

CAROLINE: It is directed by David Cronenberg who did Crash and A History of Violence, among many others so that concept of different, connected stories is totally in his wheelhouse.

RYAN: It’s very dramatic and not for everyone because of the R-rated themes and issues. It shows some of the cray that goes along with child actors, personal assistants in Hollywood, family issues, and just Hollywood in general.  These lives are a mess, egos, delusional, mental illness, all of it, everything.

CAROLINE: That’s a whole lot of cray, indeed.

RYAN: It’s quirky and violent, and freaky and interesting.  It unravels like a mystery with a disturbing streak.  It’s not for everyone but it you want a very taboo drama, this is an option.
