Horns Review

RYAN: I like to see anything Daniel Radcliffe does because you know I’m a ginormous Harry Potter fan and I thought this was intriguing since first hearing about it.

CAROLINE: So how is it?

RYAN: It’s good.  It’s different and interesting.  It covers some deep themes about good versus evil, God versus the Devil, that kind of stuff.  Not too many movies really deal with the notion of the Devil so it was cool to see that explored ad it’s there’s a real fantasy element to this too which I found appealing.

CAROLINE: It seems a bit odd to me.

RYAN: It’s definitely creepy, twisted and demented.  Some moments are actually shocking because you’re almost not prepared for the lines this movie crosses, but I found that all entertaining.

CAROLINE: How’s Dan Rad in it?

RYAN: Brilliant.  He’s the best in it and it’s a great cast – Juno Temple, Kathleen Quinlan, David Morse, Heather Graham… But Dan is so good, it’s actually his best performance that I’ve seen.  And I’ve seen almost everything he’s done, including his Broadway work.  His range really broadens here and the depths of the torment he goes through is very transparent.  I’m always rooting for him and he’s just so good in this.

CAROLINE: That’s great.  How’s his accent?

RYAN: His whole voice is very different.  He does a great Ameraccent, only losing it one one line that I noticed in the film.  But his whole cadence is deeper and it just doesn’t really even sound like how you know him to sound at all.

CAROLINE: What about the titular horns?

RYAN: They’re crazy and how they affect the story and the characters is even cooler than the effect.  There are quite a few effects in the movie and they’re all either very good or a bit over the top.   It’s based on the novel by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son, so you know there’s good scare-cred there.  And there were actually a couple scary moments.

CAROLINE: It’s rare I hear you say that.

RYAN: The beginning part of the movie had me a little dubious because you really have to buy into the fact this dude is sprouting horns.  But when you go with it, this film has some brilliance to it.  And it’s shot very well.  I also love that Dan wears Gryffindor colors for much of the film.

CAROLINE: (laughs) You would notice that.

RYAN: I also loved the soundtrack.  Lots of Bowie and even Depeche Mode.

CAROLINE: Cool.

RYAN: It’s dark and disturbing and certainly warrants it’s R rating – but it’s so different and well done.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It’s available now On Demand and iTunes.
