What If Review
RYAN: As a big Daniel Radcliffe fan, I’m glad he’s steadily working and I’m always looking forward to his next movie. This one is of the rom com variety and it’s very cute. He’s perfectly cast opposite Zoe Kazan who is so adorable, you just wanna carry her around with you.
CAROLINE: (laughs) Ok. They do look cute together, even in the poster. I’m not surprised you liked it. What worked about it, aside from the casting?
RYAN: It’s basically all about the age-old question about whether a guy and a girl can just be friends. And in this case, they’re best friends with palpable chemistry, so the question looms even larger. I like the story and you really understand it from both sides of the aisle, even though it’s more told from Dan Rad’s character;s perspective.
CAROLINE: That’s definitely a relatable theme.
RYAN: We both love a good rom com, and I especially like them when they’re fresh or sort of reinvented. This one has a real indie spirit and shows a really different side of Dan. Going in, of course, I love him because I’m such a ginormous Harry Potter fan, but I didn’t think of him as Harry even once whilst watching this film.
CAROLINE: He really has done a marvelous job breaking away from the HP shadow. Look at all the theater he’s doing and the variety of genres. It’s an impressive resume.
RYAN: Again, he and Kazan are so cute together. They have great banter and the dialogue is paced so well. There’s something effervescent and fun about them. You’re obviously rooting for them, but the challenges are real too.
CAROLINE: Any weak links?
RYAN: There is some toilet humor, which we hate, but for some reason it’s a lot less offensive in this film than when Adam Sandler or others do it, you know?
CAROLINE: I’ll take your word for it.
RYAN: I really like the costumes too – Dan looks really collegiate and Zoe is very modern hipster. They’re well defined characters. And although it feels very New York, it takes place in Toronto which also adds a sense of originality to the movie since that’s rarer than shooting these kind of films in NY, you know?
CAROLINE: Completely.
RYAN: Her name is weird though – Chantry. ANd the way Dan Rad pronounces it, I was often wondering, “What the bleep is her name?!”
CAROLINE: How random. How’s the supporting cast?
RYAN: Adam Driver is fine. I like him way better in TV’s Girls though. It’s a good movie – about love, commitment, cynicism and hope.
