Chef Movie Review

Chef PosterRYAN: I didn’t expect whilst walking into this little movie, Chef, that it would be my favorite of the year so far, and have so many little genius moments.

CAROLINE: Upon hearing how much you loved this one, I took myself to a screening and was similarly transported. What a great little movie! Though I guess we shouldn’t be surprised since it’s from writer/director/actor, Jon Favreau.

RYAN: He’s such an impressive talent. So likable, and it’s just a thrill to see him return to this intimate kind of filmmaking after all of his grand success with Marvel.

CAROLINE: I loved seeing him go back to his indie roots, but this time with all of his A-list friends in the cast. We’re talking Dustin Hoffman, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr. and Sofia Vergara.

RYAN: It is a dream cast. And NYC and other cities play as much a character in this film as the city did in Sex and the City.

CAROLINE: My only beef with this movie was the length; I thought it dragged a tiny bit once they were on the road. But truly, it was so adorable and heart-warming, that I didn’t really mind.

RYAN: I agree that 3/4 of the way in it drags a bit, but didn’t deter me from feeling overall enjoyment of the film. It’s the first food movie since Big Night that made me want to open a restaurant.

CAROLINE: Yes, it’s total food porn, so don’t go into this one hungry.

RYAN: Except for the meat themes, during which I literally had to look away from the screen since I’m a vegetarian.

CAROLINE: This movie made me both laugh and cry. It’s so sincere and so funny and so tragic in some ways… but never ceased to hold my attention. I would happily see it again.

RYAN: I can’t wait to see it again! I loved the relationship between Favreau and his son. But the only unrealistic thing was that Scarlett and Sofia would never go for Jon Favreau, I’m sorry. They’re the hottest women in the world, and he’s so average.

CAROLINE: It’s the Kevin James school of moviemaking! One thing I was wondering while watching this movie was if the Twitter tie-ins were bothering you. I know how much you hate product placement.

RYAN: True, and thanks for thinking of me; however, Twitter was such an integral part of the story that I kind of dug it in this case, and it made a somewhat timeless story seem more modern. There’s a real story arc here, but it feels a little bit like two stories in one; the first part is his restaurant and career, and the second part is about him and his kid.

CAROLINE: Yes, and I loved it all. The story certainly isn’t groundbreaking by any means but it’s so funny and sweet. It’s perfectly cast. I hate to use the term “feel-good movie” but it really is. I kind of loved it. I think I even tweeted about it, just to make the Twitter theme come full circle.

RYAN: I feel confident now that this will have a spot in my year end’s top ten list.

It sounds like a fun movie and I’ve liked everything Jon Favreau has done. I still credit Swingers as being the first real version of a GUY chick flick.
