Muppets Most Wanted Review

Muppets-Most-Wanted-PosterRYAN: It’s the sequel to The Muppets and I’ve always been a Muppets fan; love that the franchise is relaunched.  Amy Adams and Jason Segel didn’t return, but we have RIcky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell.  What I love most about it is that it’s a musical and during each number I was smiling.

NATHAN: I also grew up as a Muppets fan and I continue to enjoy the original TV series.  I had very high hopes for this movie and I have to say, I feel like a little bit of a traitor.  I mean, I liked it better than the last one, but…

RYAN: You hated the last one?

NATHAN: Hated it.

RYAN: I liked The Muppets and while this one isn’t as comical, I still liked this a bit more because of the story.  The last one was all about introducing a new Muppet and this is more of a classic Muppet story – it’s a caper, it’s James Bond meets Hollywood Golden-era Musical.

NATHAN: Yeah this one does have a classic Muppet plot.  I actually thought this was funnier than the last one and of course, there are some great cameos which I found really played to the humor.  The only reason I’d ever want to become a celebrity would be to make a cameo appearance with The Muppets.

RYAN: Or host SNL.

NATHAN: (laughs) Yes then I’d retire. I think the star power was a little under-utilized.  There were so many famous people but, like, RIcky didn’t have that much to do.

RYAN: Tina made me laugh out loud twice but you’re absolutely right about Ricky.  He’s one of my favorite comedic stars and he wasn’t funny at all in this.  It’s such a waste of his talent.  I certainly can’t imagine he improv’ed at all in this and it really could have been any actor in his role.  Why wasn’t he funny?  Such a missed opportunity!  He could have really brought in an edge for the adults in the audience.

NATHAN: Absolutely.  I expected more from him as well.  To me, it looked like he hated performing some of the bits they had him – or made him – do in this film.  Jim Henson had a magical ability to make anything, whether it was cheesy or not, turn into comedic gold and I don’t think The Muppets have achieved it again without him.

RYAN: I was a little concerned when the credits stated The Muppets characters are based on Disney and didn’t attribute to Jim Henson, at least from what I saw.  Anyway, I liked seeing all the actors – Ray Liotta, Danny Trejo, Celine Dion…

NATHAN: Yeah they were all good to see in this.  They’re still riding the coattails, a bit, of the original Muppet movies… I was a bit disappointed in this since my expectations were so high.

RYAN: Still, as fun as this movie is, it doesn’t eclipse the original Muppet movies but I found it highly entertaining and it’s The Muppets!
