Veronica Mars Review

Veronica MarsRYAN: It’s finally here – and Marshmallows the world over must be rejoicing.  I know I would be doing backflips for a big screen adaptation of Ally McBeal – but it was the resourcefulness of Rob Thomas (VM creator) and his ingenious Kickstarter campaign that brought this about.

CAROLINE: Yeah it was really unprecedented.  They raised, like, $6 million and a year later the movie’s hitting theaters via Warner Bros.  I never got into the show.

RYAN: I never saw it either but wish I had – still I can give it the honest review from someone who isn’t going in with expectations, because, LBH, let’s be honest, all the fans of the TV series are gonna love it.

CAROLINE: True that.  How did you like it?

RYAN: I did like it – didn’t love it.  The film opens with a quick recap of the series over the opening credits to get those of us, like me, up to speed on what the series was about.  I wish they had spent a bit more but it’s really a sign that this is a movie for the fans; rightly so, they paid for it..

CAROLINE: (laughs) Exactly.  So… you just kinda liked it?

RYAN: No I liked it a lot.  It’s a great intrigue and I love mystery.  There are a lot of winks and nods to inside jokes and things that I think went over my head, catering to the “marshmallows” but you can certainly follow the main plot.  I love one cameo I don’t want to ruin and they even poke fun at crowd-funding.

CAROLINE: They must have all had such a blast reuniting for the movie.

RYAN: Totally. But it’s not as cool of a movie as, like, Sex and the City: The Movie was.  It’s not a bigger, badder, sexier version of Veronica Mars.  It’s just a feature-length TV episode that picks up this many years later, after the show ended.  I chatted with a fan of the show whilst exiting the screening and he told me that it basically picks up with the characters where you’d expect them to be today.

CAROLINE: That seems logical.

RYAN: The way it began, I almost thought it would be like an edgier Legally Blonde, but Veronica is not Elle Woods.

CAROLINE: I’d imagine not.  How was Kristen Bell and the cast?

RYAN: She’s so cute and likable.  She’s obviously very comfy with the character.  I didn’t really feel unbelievable chemistry though between her and her cast-mates.

CAROLINE: Well since the show ended, she’s the only one to become a star so maybe there are issues.

RYAN: (laughs) I just expected the chemistry to be palpable but it was tame.  There’s a bit of annoying product placement.

CAROLINE: That always irks you. Anyone else in it you like?

RYAN: Krysten Ritter, Jerry O’Connell, Gaby Hoffman, who’s s scene stealer… they’re all pretty good.  Jerry still majorly over-acts which is a problem.  James Franco is high-lar in it.  There’s lots of discovery of evidence and analysis and I liked all of the mystery components.  There’s also a theme of addiction running throughout which I found confusing but it won’t be to fans of the show.

CAROLINE: You think they’ll have a sequel?

RYAN: Well they certainly can do it on the cheap.  We’ll see how it does at the B.O.  I enjoyed it enough to see more…
