Mr. Peabody & Sherman Review

Mr_Peabody_&_Sherman_PosterRYAN: I’m glad to be joined by my niece, Gaby, for this review!  This is the new 3D animated family adventure film featuring Mr. Peabody & Sherman, characters spun off from the old Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. I wasn’t familiar with them before this and they certain adapt well to modern computer animation.  It’s very Indiana Jones meets Sherlock Holmes with a dash of science and world history.  It’s educational, entertaining and really clever.

GABY: Yeah it’s really cute.  I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

RYAN: There are great themes about parenting, individuality, self esteem and family connections. There are also scenes dealing with bullying, friendship, and different types of kids.  I always love movies with a message that are so entertaining, you’re not necessarily aware you’re getting an education too.

GABY: It’s a very fun movie with a lot going on and happening to all the characters but when you think about it, you realize there is a message behind it.

RYAN: What theme did you find in the story?

GABY: Like, don’t take people for granted, maybe?

RYAN: Totally! That’s a huge theme.  Very good.  There is a lot of time travel involved so there’s also this Back to the Future edge to it.  And it was cool seeing iconic characters and moments in world history.  I love time travel in movies, but the actual time machine was derivative of the pod that the turkeys used in last year’s Free Birds, except red.  It’s a super cute relationship between Mr. Peabody – the world’s most educated dog and his adopted human son, Sherman. There were a lot of plays on “man’s best friend,” a boy and a dog.

GABY: It was kind of weird at first that the dog was talking and no one seemed bothered by it.

RYAN: But he was the one dog in this universe who could talk.  The animation is good and dynamic.

GABY: I agree and the 3D was really good.  It was used well.

RYAN: There’s also a cute film short before the movie called Almost Home about aliens, voiced by Steve Martin.

GABY: That was really cute.  I actually thought that was the real movie starting.  I didn’t realize, at first, that it was a short.

RYAN: Me too.  It’s candy colored and fun.  The movie itself has a lot of puns in it; the script is clever.  And it’s funny for all ages.  DO you think your friends would like it?

GABY: Yes I think so.  It’s funny.  I really liked seeing the climax at the end and how it all ends.  I loved seeing Spartacus.

RYAN: Yeah there are a ton of great characters.  What did you think of the bullying scenes?

GABY: It actually reminded me of what some people are like at school.  Bullying is common and no one really stands up for anyone else.  It’s kind of sad but in this movie you get to see them work through it.

RYAN: It’s a great option for families and anyone who appreciates a fun, quick, animated movie.

    Hi Ryan ~
Thanks for your invite to Mr Peabody & Sherman’s screening. I loved this movie ~ the 3D animation was awesome & the story-line was sooooo good. It’s a great movie for everyone ~ lots of lessons for kids plus some world history info. I also think the bullying segments were good and hopefully kids will learn something from them. It was a fun movie ~ both Gary & I enjoyed everything about it. No one could go home crabby afater seeing this movie ~ it keeps you smiling and/or laughing a lot! I hope there’s a sequel. Your niece did a good review ~ it was interesting to read the young generation’s viewpoint. She had a lot of good insight & picked up on some things that many people would miss.
The Almost Home short was cute & fun also.
