About Time Review

About-Time-2013-Movie-PosterRYAN: This new romantic dramedy stars Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson and it makes you feel like you’re in love and like you’re falling in love.  No matter how bitter you are; whether you’re single or coupled up – this movie has such strength stemming from the palpable chemistry between these stars.  It’s every bit as strong as that between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in SIlver Linings Playbook.  It’s a beautiful movie.  You feel the love.  I loved it.

KIM: I absolutely loved it.  It inspired me, walking out of the movie, I’m like, I just wanna tell everyone how much I love them and appreciate everything. It’s so uplifting.

RYAN: It gives new meaning to feel good movie.  It’s a literal feel-good-movie.  It’s deep.

KIM: It generated emotions we often overlook and take for granted.

CHUCK: The trailer didn’t really appeal to me. I thought it looked stupid but I had high hopes coming in because of Richard Curtis, the writer/director. He has good precedent.  He did Love Actually, among others.  But I wasn’t ready for how profound it is.  It makes you think about life deeply and be happy and fall in love and want to hug the first person you see.

RYAN: There are great themes of family, relationships and appreciating life and what’s precious, priorities… all in this really great script and awesome performances.

KIM: It’s been a while since I’ve really liked a Rachel McAdams movie.  And I completely loved her in this.

RYAN: For me, the movie really started when she first hits the screen.  Feeling that chemistry between them is when the whole thing really turns on. Then the rest of the film is a big boom forward.

CHUCK: There is great build up to first seeing her.  Magic.

RYAN: Total Hollywood magic moment.

CHUCK: And the magic didn’t end after that.  This movie is like a warm cup of cocoa.  It’s wonderful and fantastic.  Like this director’s other work, the soundtrack here is terrific.  There’s such a good ear for picking the right songs for scenes.

RYAN: I was already thinking I want the soundtrack.  But Rachel looks great and she’s so good and sweet in this; however, hello Domhnall Gleeson!  He was Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter movies.  He’s the son of actor Brendan Gleeson who was Mad-Eye Moody.  Interestingly, he’s so well-suited for this role because he’s not conventionally handsome.  But something happens when Rachel is falling in love with him.  He becomes more attractive and by the end of the movie I thought he was a hot guy.

KIM: The glances they share and seeing him look at her evoked a lot of emotion in me too. I’m just in a very loving mood right now.

RYAN: Wanna make out?

ALL: (laugh)

CHUCK: The whole cast was great without ever going over the top or getting campy.  It’s all very natural acting with authentic moments.

KIM: I loved Bill Nighy.  I always think of him as Viktor from Underworld with a creepy undertone.  He’s so wonderful and pulls your heartstrings in this.

RYAN: I love how Curtis consistently writes great, quirky English characters.  Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, About a Boy… and the supporting cast here is fantastic once again. All instantly classic cinematic characters.

CHUCK: This is an instant classic.  You’ll watch this over and over again and just get sucked into it whenever it’s on TV or whatever.

KIM: It’s so relatable, aside from the time travel.

RYAN: It makes me wish I could time travel.

KIM: Just for little things though.

CHUCK: Oh, I’d go for the millions.

KIM: (laughs) But just to change an awful day to a better one would be cool.

RYAN: This is a unique crossbreed of a film in that it’s a chick flick with a science fiction edge.  It’s a soft sci fi romantic dramedy.

CHUCK: And it all feels plausible.

RYAN: Any great movie requires the suspension of disbelief and within the context of this film you wholeheartedly subscribe to the fact these guys can travel across time.  It’s a gorgeous movie with a lot of good meaning.
