I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY
RYAN: “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” is a controversial film for a good reason.
CAROLINE: It’s a dumb comedy starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James, with a dash of hotness from Jessica Biel. And it definitely takes several potshots at gays and Asians, as well as people with good taste.
RYAN: It really spends a great proportion of its length reinforcing negative stereotypes about the gay community.
CAROLINE: The movie does turn around by the end and it sort of has a positive message, but by then you don’t care. And the movie ends about five times. After fifteen minutes of this, I was like, “Oh, ok, this must be the ending. Oh wait, it’s not. Ok, this must be it. But no, wait. For the love of God, when is this movie going to end?!”
RYAN: It has the exact same ending as the Kevin Kline film, “In & Out.” And by the time it turns a little bit pro-gay, it’s too little too late.
CAROLINE: Honestly, I was more offended by the completely lame humor. The comedy is so broad – gratuitous fart jokes, gratuitous fat jokes. Anyone with an ounce of taste will sit in the theater with a stone face on. I admit I tittered once or twice, but that’s about all I could muster.
RYAN: There are one or two decent things about the film; for starters, Jessica Biel’s rockin’ body.
CAROLINE: She is hot, and I liked her scenes a lot. She plays a lawyer and she’s surprisingly believable.
RYAN: For me the best part of the movie was any scene with the boy who plays Kevin James’s son. He has a role very similar to the boy on “Ugly Betty.”
CAROLINE: He plays a little boy who is clearly going to be gay, and he does a split several times throughout the film. He provided a little bit of comedy in this otherwise stupid movie. Mostly it’s just a lot of gay stereotyping, and while there is a place to find humor there, they seem to miss it every time.
RYAN: We saw this movie with our friend Cosmo who pointed out that since this movie takes place in New York City, specifically Brooklyn, no one would be that homophobic. They should have set the film in a smaller city.
CAROLINE: That was weird for sure. But getting back to the lameness of the humor – they literally make “don’t drop the soap” jokes when they’re in the shower. To me, that isn’t so much anti-gay as it is anti-humor.
RYAN: What’s your bottom line?
CAROLINE: I thought I might like this movie because of the cast, but only Jessica Biel was good. Adam Sandler did nothing for me. I prefer him in romantic comedies with Drew Barrymore. Kevin James was ok, but overall, this movie is unfunny and not worth seeing.
RYAN: I haven’t seen Adam Sandler in a movie in a while because I skipped that one he was in with Don Cheadle.
CAROLINE: Ugh, “Reign Over Me.” Don’t get me started.
RYAN: But nonetheless, I’m tired of Adam Sandler. His tricks have run out and he’s entered the realm of Jim Carrey. He needs to start doing something vastly different, even if it’s indie and kooky. So overall, even though this movie made me laugh a couple of times, I think the people who are going to like it are straight guys who just want to go and gay bash for an hour and a half.
CAROLINE: Try and hour and forty-five. Trust me, I was counting the minutes.
