Insidious Chapter 2 Review
RYAN: At least it’s consistent. I liked this sequel about as much as I liked the first one and is suffers from all the same formulaic issues.
CAROLINE: I haven’t seen either.
RYAN: We like the cast – Patrick Wilson.
CAROLINE: God he’s so hot!
RYAN: Rose Byrne and Barbara Hershey, who, I can only keep thinking, “From Beaches and Black Swan to this franchise? Seriously?”
CAROLINE: How the mighty have fallen. But the first film did pretty well and it’s directed by James Wan.
RYAN: Right and I really liked The Conjuring a couple months ago which he also directed but that was so much better.
CAROLINE: Why?
RYAN: The mythology to the premise of these Insidious movies is alright but both films over-indulge in it to the extent that is spirals out of control and loses its fear factor.
CAROLINE: That’s unfortunate. I know you like to be scared in a horror movie.
RYAN: That’s all I expect. And I did jump a few times in this film but always for the lazy, manipulative scares with music, editing and things jumping out at you. It’s takes more creative effort to be authentically scary.
CAROLINE: So this one won’t keep you up at night, you’re saying.
RYAN: If you’re like me and you’ve seen a lot of horror movies, this one won’t really get you. But maybe if you’re young and new to scary movies, you’ll really think this one is creeptastic.
CAROLINE: I’m so not interested.
RYAN: It’s derivative of The Shining and Poltergeist, but those movies were better. These Insidious movies aren’t great, but I could see myself scrolling through them at home sometime. They’re worth a rental or catching on cable someday if you like the genre.
