The Heat Review
RYAN: I love how a good movie makes you feel more vibrant when you leave the theater. No matter what’s going on in your life, when the escapism works in a good movie, it’s like good therapy.
KIM: And man, was this good therapy!
RYAN: It stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, directed by Paul Feig, who earner Melissa an Oscar nom for directing her in Bridesmaids. It’s similar to that film in that it’s a very large comedy, or any genre really, with female leads, which is rare for big movies. It’s an R-rated comedy with tons of profanity and I loved it. It could be bigger than Bridesmaids.
KIM: I hope so. It totally deserves it. Indeed there is a lot of fowl language. Every other word out of Meliss’s mouth was a swear word but that’s who her character was and it’s not offensive. It’s funny. For all that this movie has lewd language, there is none of the barf and poop jokes which are just to tired in other movies.
RYAN: For the first minute of the film, I was worried that Sandy B. would just be acting like her FBI Agent character from Miss Congeniality, but she was totally different in this. It’s a new character for her. While she’s often the “straight-man,” setting up the comedy for Melissa, she also has her own comedic moments to shine and they were brilliant.
KIM: It’s just so nice to see a movie with strong female characters that just make it.
RYAN: And unlike Bridesmaids, which is more of an ensemble piece, The Heat really rests on the shoulders of just these two ladies and they carry the entire film.
KIM: …more than carry it. It’s so funny and so good.
RYAN: There are some great supporting actors – Demian Bichir, who was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar last year played Sandy’s boss. Marlon Wayans is super cute.
KIM: He’s the hottest Wayans brother; just super cute.
RYAN: Melissa’s real life husband, Ben Falcone, again has a cameo.
KIM: OMG I didn’t even recognize him!
RYAN: And of course Jane Curtin as Melissa’s mom but I wanted more of her. Why have her and then under-use her? Oh, and Joey McIntyre of the New Kids on the Block who looks smokin’!
KIM: I was like, OMG that’s Joey from NKOTB! [laughs’ Those eyes are to die for.
RYAN: The script is just so fantastic and you know Melissa must have improvised some of it. And it’s the kind of movie you just wanna watch again because you’ll want to learn some of these lines so you can quote them with friends.
KIM: This is definitely one that will go on my movie shelf. I wanna see it again, already, because there were so many lines where the who theater LOL’d so loudly that you couldn’t even hear the next lines. So we missed some of the dialogue because it’s so funny. Such great energy in the theater tonight.
RYAN: The audience was, lit’rally, roaring with laughter. It was like being at a comedy club.
KIM: I can’t remember the last movie I laughed this hard at.
RYAN: And Sandy looks waymazing! She looks like she’s 30.
KIM: I was turning red looking at her during this movie she looks so good!
RYAN: Doesn’t look like she’s using any Botox even.
KIM: If she’s had any work done, it’s incredible.
RYAN: Though as outstanding as Melissa is in this, she is a little bit of the same tone as her performances in Bridesmaids, Identity Thief, This is 40. She’s not annoying like Ben Stiller has become. Her shtick all still totally works but it is a little bit derivative of what we’ve seen her do before.
KIM: The delivery is a bit the same but she’s not overly-saturated yet. She’s still at the point where it’s funny. This movie really had it all. It’s funny as hell. It’s the funniest movie of the last decade.
RYAN: Totally. I just loved it. The pacing is amazing. It’s paced so well and the comedy never dips. These women will say anything and cross any line for the funny and it just all works. This is a huge crowd-pleaser.
