RYAN: Oh no.

CAROLINE: Oh no, what?

RYAN: Good trailer, bad movie.

CAROLINE: Oh really?! That’s so sad.  This cast is amazing.

RYAN: I know.  I’m seriously disappointed.  I obviously went in with high expectations because of the cast and the trailer is amazing.  But this movie is a major fail.

CAROLINE: It’s possible.  It happens.  What went wrong here?

RYAN: Well it starts out okay.  I liked the first scene and all of the magic trickery.  It’s set up in a way where each of the magicians and illusionists are all interesting in their own right, well defined and the come together with their strengths fitting like pieces of a puzzle.

CAROLINE: That sounds good.

RYAN: But then the whole story flips the switch.  I don’t do spoilers so I won’t give anything away, but it’s that when the movie ends and you look back at the story, it doesn’t work.  It’s illogical.  You’re basically identifying with each character – one more than the others – and then the momentum fizzles.

CAROLINE: That sounds confusing.  Is it a confusing movie?

RYAN: Completely.  It’s a very lazy script in that it’s intricate but never effectively clues you in, as the audience, as to how it all works.  It’s a mess.

CAROLINE: Well the cast looks amazing.  How was Morgan Freeman?

RYAN: It’s the worst performance of his career! I love him, but I swear it was like he’d never acted before.  It was like he was just out of high school.  I’m embarrassed for him in this movie.

CAROLINE: Ouch.  What about Mark Ruffalo?

RYAN: Hulk was good but his character totally annoyed me.  Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isl Fisher and Dave Franco were all fine and I liked them the most as the magicians; their chemistry as a quartet was great but the movie isn’t about them as much as Ruffalo’s character… so that’s a bummer.

CAROLINE: Wow, I’m actually surprised by this one.

RYAN: And the score is also noteworthy – cause it sucked.  It was like ripped from some bad, cheesy ’80s movie.

CAROLINE: Eek.  This is all so disappointing.

RYAN: Tell me about it.  I love magic and this cast and the trailer looked so good so it’s one of the biggest disappointments in recent history.
