The Hangover Part 3 Review
RYAN: I really don’t understand how this became a trilogy. I’m not on board.
CAROLINE: Clearly it made bank. How was this one in comparison to the previous two?
RYAN: Well the first one was something. We absolutely abhorred the second because it was the least original film in history and completely annoying. It was the exact same movie as the first but just in a different city.
CAROLINE: Yes that was unacceptable.
RYAN: Part 3 is at least a new story, so I’m glad of that aspect, but it’s not a must see film.
CAROLINE: I suspected as much.
RYAN: First of all, it’s not really even a comedy. It’s more of a screwball action film. There are comedic moments, and the ending is especially funny. But when you walk into a Hangover movie, you expect to LOL.
CAROLINE: Not so much, I guess.
RYAN: I never really loved these characters; that’s part of my problem. I love Brad Cooper and Zach Galifianakis is really the scene stealer in these films, but they’re so cheesy and lame. Ed Helms is fine and Justin Bartha is barely in it, true to formula. But this movie is mostly about Ken Jeong as Mr. Chow.
CAROLINE: Yeah he’s always been a crazy part of those movies.
RYAN: He really goes all out and he’s fine. It’s all typical schtick at this point though.
CAROLINE: Isn’t Melissa McCarthy in this one too?
RYAN: She is and I just love anything she does so she’s a pleasant addition to the film but I would have liked to see more of her than just the cameo scene.
CAROLINE: Her hair looks hilarious in the trailer.
RYAN: Yeah it’s pretty brilliant. You know the thing about the humor in this film – it’s pretty broad and sometimes just so wrong but it’s not really a smart movie. And there are things that happen that are so far fetched and ridiculous that the whole thing just comes across as lame.
CAROLINE: Anyone else in it that left an impression?
RYAN: John Goodman, actually. He was great in this though again, not enough of him.
CAROLINE: At least they broke the formula this time. I know you went in with really low expectations.
RYAN: I did. Heather Graham is back again for a little scene that was remarkably unfunny. I really only chortled on the inside while watching this movie, until the very end and then the extra scene in the credits. Those were the only really authentically funny moments.
CAROLINE: Well at least, as advertised, it’s the end.
RYAN: Someone pointed out to me this movie isn’t even about a hangover. It’s not of major consequence but it’s interesting.
CAROLINE: I’m kinda glad I skipped this one, to be honest.
RYAN: It’s certainly better than number two but it’s strange and almost like a B-movie. It obviously has some A-list cred but it never really takes off. There are much better movies to see right now instead of this one.
