Peeples Review
RYAN: I was initially leery of this film because Tyler Perry is associated with it and we know his movies are never that good.
CAROLINE: Right and they don’t even screen for critics. But he didn’t write or direct this one; he just produced.
RYAN: And thankfully, this movie is the better for it. It’s a sweet, light and funny movie. I liked it for being simple and cute. But I would have liked it more if it had been deeper and the characters had been more fleshed out.
CAROLINE: Can you explain without giving anything away?
RYAN: The characters are each well defined but this is a movie about a dysfunctional family and it never plays into the drama. It’s not a dramedy at all and I think it would have benefited from a bit more of the heavy stuff instead of keeping things just surface and fluff.
CAROLINE: I hear you.
RYAN: I just don’t really buy the main premise that Kerry Washington’s character never told her family about her boyfriend and then that he never really busts her chops about it. I don’t mind suspending disbelief, but it just kept things too superficial there.
CAROLINE: How was Kerry?
RYAN: Incredible. She’s one of the most talented women working today. I just love her. She’s one of those people you say you could just listen to reading the phonebook – she is that compelling.
CAROLINE: I like her too.
RYAN: I love her in TV’s Scandal and I love her on the big screen. She has a bigger role in this movie than she did in Django Unchained so I was glad of it.
CAROLINE: She’s gorge.
RYAN: The star is Craig Robinson from TV’s The Office and he’s actually been in a lot of stuff but this is his first big starring role. He was very funny and can sing really well. The movie has a musical edge to it and I, of course, love that.
CAROLINE: He’s portly.
RYAN: [laughs’ Too true and you don’t really buy that a girl like Kerry is dating him. She’s so out of his league, even with bangs.
CAROLINE: Totally! How was the rest?
RYAN: I love David Alan Grier, S. Epatha Merkerson, Diahann Carroll… it’s a great cast. I also liked seeing New York and Sag Harbor. It’s a very New York story but not like Sex and the City. Oh – Ana Gasteyer also has a bit part. It’s nice seeing her.
CAROLINE: Cool.
RYAN: It’s a cute movie. It’s short and sweet. Ultimately it’s a romantic comedy but it says a lot about family so I like how there is an originality to it that way. It’s a good date movie but not a must see.
