CHASING MAVERICKS
RYAN: This is a movie for surfers. Really, if you don’t surf or care about surfing, you won’t be into this. I certainly wasn’t.
CAROLINE: Isn’t it based on a true story?
RYAN: Yes and that part makes me feel guilty because it pays tribute to someone but it still doesn’t make it a good movie, you know?
CAROLINE: I do but why wasn’t it good?
RYAN: Well it’s just a very superficial script. The dialogue needed some brushing up. And also, it’s not shot or edited very creatively. There was such potential for glorious shots of waves and yet it doesn’t impress.
CAROLINE: That’s too bad.
RYAN: There were many missed opportunities. Elisabeth Shue looks great, as always, but I wanted more of her. Though it’s not her story. And the star, Jonny Westin, is cute but not a great actor. It’s like they just found the cute guy who could surf and cast him.
CAROLINE: Well he did need to surf for the film.
RYAN: And all the scenes with him and the girl he’s crushing on just made me keep thinking Blue Lagoon.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ He does look very Blue Lagoon!
RYAN: I love Gerard Butler and he’s great in the water, but this was not his best American accent.
CAROLINE: Aw that’s too bad.
RYAN: The climax is also anticlimactic but it’s because of how it’s shot and edited. And there’s a lot of technical surfing talk that I just didn’t care about. Maybe with the right cast and a better script, this could have been very powerful and moving. But I was really disappointed in it.
CAROLINE: Well they can’t all be winners.
RYAN: I really can’t imagine this appealing to anyone who isn’t into surfing.
