2007 Oscar Nominations Announced!
CAROLINE: Oscars 2007! The nominations came out this morning, and we’re so excited.
RYAN: It is a huge day in the world of film.
CAROLINE: And there are some major surprises.
RYAN: Major! And some disappointments, I might add. First, whilst it got the most nominations of any film this year, it was completely shut out of Best Picture and Best Director…
CAROLINE: You’re talking, of course, about “Dreamgirls,” which I think was not worthy of a Best Picture nom, so I’m just as happy. But Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson were nominated, and mercifully, Beyoncé was not.
RYAN: Thank goodness.
CAROLINE: One of my favorite categories this year is Best Supporting Actor because it’s vastly different from the Golden Globes, and I’m thrilled that Jackie Earle Haley got nominated for “Little Children.”
RYAN: Yes! Yes! Yes! He was brazilliant in that movie and very deserving of the nomination.
CAROLINE: How about Mark Wahlberg getting nominated for “The Departed” and not Jack Nicholson?
RYAN: It’s great. Come on. Jack Nicholson is one of the most award-winning actors ever, and it’s Mark’s first nomination. So it’s a good thing.
CAROLINE: How excited am I that Sacha Baron Cohen will be at the Oscars? He’s so hot, and I’m thrilled that he was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Borat.”
RYAN: And how excited are both of us that Ryan Gosling will be there for Best Actor?
CAROLINE: Oh my God! Rachel McAdams will be with him!
RYAN: Yes, if we’re lucky. Because girl can’t be bothered to make films anymore. Hopefully, we’ll get to see her walking the red carpet on the arm of one of Hollywood’s hottest.
CAROLINE: I cannot wait for that moment. Let’s just hope she doesn’t have that wacky pink hair.
RYAN: For Best Actress, I think the race is really between Helen Mirren and Judi Dench.
CAROLINE: Hello? It could be Meryl Streep. Or even Kate Winslet. She’s long overdue. But my main question for you is, we’ve seen all the Best Picture nominations except for “Letters from Iwo Jima” – do we now have to see that movie?
RYAN: Of course. How can we take ourselves seriously if we haven’t seen all of the films nominated for Best Picture? I have every other year.
CAROLINE: I haven’t.
RYAN: Well, that’s wackadoodle.
CAROLINE: Well at least I saw “Flags of Our Fathers,” which is the counterpart to “Letters from Iwo Jima,” which you haven’t even seen!
RYAN: I don’t think I’m gonna bother to see “Flags.” It’s not nominated for anything. Whilstwhile, the Supporting Actress category is mostly the same as the Golden Globes, but I’m kind of surprised that Abigail Breslin got nominated for “Little Miss Sunshine.”
CAROLINE: Oh, I saw that coming.
RYAN: Now she’s tied with Tatum O’Neal for the youngest actress ever to be nominated.
CAROLINE: And I have to say, she was cute and all, but “Little Miss Sunshine” isn’t an Oscar-caliber film. It’s like that year when “The Full Monty” was nominated for Best Picture. Yes, these are cute movies, but they don’t deserve Best Picture nominations just because they were popular indies.
RYAN: My favorite category this year is Adapted Screenplay. Every film nominated in that category, I think, should have been up for Best Picture. Except exchange “Borat” for “Dreamgirls.”
CAROLINE: The Adapted Screenplay category is always interesting because it’s like the People’s Second Choice Awards. They’re like, “You’re movie was decent, but we couldn’t nominate it for Best Picture, so here’s a Screenplay nomination.”
RYAN: “Dreamgirls” got three of the five nods for Best Song. I wonder if any other film has ever had that many in the category.
CAROLINE: I’m sure I don’t know.
RYAN: And I’m also glad that “Children of Men” received three deserving noms.
CAROLINE: Ooh, me too.
RYAN: And “The Illusionist” got nominated for Best Cinematography.
CAROLINE: Whatever. Stay tuned for our post about “Letters from Iwo Jima.”
RYAN: Yeah, I guess. And in the meantime, Happy Oscar Nominations!
