The Hundred-Foot Journey Review

Hundred-Foot JourneyRYAN: This is such a special movie.  It’s absolutely feel good and is packed with Disney magic, without at all being any kind of fairy tale or involving any princesses.  It’s a PG rated drama that is so well written, cast, and shot – I just loved it.

CAROLINE: That’s great.  Everyone loves Helen Mirren so I’m not surprised, right?

RYAN: She is phenomenal and I fell like I always love her more in every movie I see her in.  She’s the icing on top of the cake in this film.  She’s not in the first twenty minutes or so, but I have to tell you it’s so good that I totally forgot she was in it and wasn’t even thinking, like, “Ok, where’s the Mirren?”

CAROLINE: I think that says a lot.  Sounds like a strong film.

RYAN: You would love it.  It comes from the perspective that food can break barriers.  It’s truly an international thing and there’s so much romance to all of the food in this film.  It’s gorgeously shot and I insist you either eat beforehand or have some good movie snacks, because the screen is delectable.

CAROLINE: Oh honey, I know what that’s like.

RYAN: This is produced by Oprah and Spielberg and they did a really great job putting the right team together – everything from the soundtrack to the costumes and set design, the locations, cinematography and casting – it’s just all so seamlessly beautiful and wonderful.  It’s based on a novel and the story adapts so well to screen.  It’s about an underdog chef and there is a subplot of family and business competition and forbidden romance – there’s just so much passion in it that it’s all palpable.  It often results in choking up or happy tears.

CAROLINE: I love that!

RYAN: There’s a moment that talks about how food has memory associated with it and it’s so true.  The lead guy, Manish Dayal, is so expressive and I loved him. The ingenue is played by Charlotte Le Bon and she has a sweet, Kiera Knightley quality about her.  And for much of the film Mirren reminded me of Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.  She’s just exquisite in this film.

CAROLINE: Nice.  I really wanna see this.

RYAN:  I love the heart in this film.  It’s all about the perseverance of soul and passion.  It’s very inspiring.
