Mortdecai Review

MortdecaiRYAN: Although it’s opening in January, I had high hopes for this movie; love the cast and was all kinds of ready to be disappointed, but happily, I’m not – this movie is super!  It’s a delightfully fresh, funny film I could easily see myself watching again and again.  I’m even hoping for a sequel, though it’s doubtful it will make bank this weekend with all the Oscar contenders out.

CAROLINE: Yeah it’s really opening at a rough time.  And I think people are generally over Johnny Depp in this over the top roles.

RYAN: I feel that.  And I agree he’s pretty tired on the character front.  It’s like he was great as Edward Scissorhands and then hasn’t turned back since then.  I’d really not like to see him as Jack Sparrow again and yet he’s really perfect in this role.  While he’s reminiscent of Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther, he’s also original.  I love the character.  I love all the characters, actually.

CAROLINE: Even Gwynnie?  She and her Goop have been so annoying in the last year or so.

RYAN: I know she’s not in favor but I can’t resist her – especially when she works her English accent.  I like her even better British than American.

CAROLINE: (laughs) Ok.  And of course there’s your Hollywood husband – Ewan McGregor.  How’s he?

RYAN: I do love him.  And this is how I like him best – sweet, affable, charming… he’s just still my favorite.  I like so many actors and actresses but Ewan has that je ne sais quoi, you know?

CAROLINE: I’m sure I don’t.  How’s Johnny’s mustache?

RYAN: It’s practically another character and a running gag throughout.  It grew on me… pun intended?

CAROLINE: Sure that can be a pun.

RYAN: The score is cool – it’s very Austin Powers meets Quentin Tarrantino.

CAROLINE: That might be the most random mashup ever.

RYAN: Paul Bettany is also a homerun in this movie.  Each actor has alternating comedic moments and they are all both in dialogue and physical comedy.  And it’s really not too much.  It’s not as outright silly as the Pink Panther movies.  There are certainly some moments like that but it’s also a very overall, smart, snappy movie that has oodles of swagger.

CAROLINE: Oodles?  Alright.  I like a quick-witted comedy.

RYAN: That it is.  And while the action scenes are not groundbreaking, they move the pace along nicely.  Olivia Munn also comes into the third act and she’s so adorable.  There’s such a British backbone to the film and it’s highly styled with wardrobe, travel effects, decor… it’s a fun movie to watch.  It’s a lighthearted romp of a film that’s really a breath of fresh air among all the heavy Oscar movies.  I just sat and enjoyed this one.
