Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

Captain Amer Winter SoldierRYAN:Forget about Spring – Summer is here! This is a Summer blockbuster opening in Spring!  This movie is so amazing. I was blown away by it.  I liked it more than the first Captain America and more than both Thor movies.  It’s the smartest plot of any superhero movie.

KIM: It really is brilliant.  The whole Marvel universe is so impressive.  DC is slacking.  Marvel is kicking ass and taking names.  I love this movie but it was just horrible watching Chris Evans for so long.

RYAN: (laughs) Your sarcasm becomes you! This is the first time I’ve seen a man who supersedes needing to take his shirt off.  He’s so hot, even with just a tank top on, you don’t even need to see more skin.  He doesn’t lose his shirt and doesn’t need to.

KIM: He is so hot.  He really is a specimen.  His body almost looks CGI’d.

RYAN: This isn’t my favorite superhero movie but it’s definitely the most intricate with the best storyline.  WIthout giving anything away, there are plot points that are so brilliant.  They may or may not be based on comic books; they may be original, but so interesting.  I was enjoying the story just as much as the action and the effects.

KIM: The first movie I liked, didn’t love.  They had to tell his origin story and go through the war.  That all bogged it down but having this one take place in present day, it was so refreshing and I love how they tied the first movie into this one.  It had such amazing flow.

RYAN: Marvel is improving upon their own formula with each of these movies.  It does tie into its last film but also other films in the mega-franchise.  Black Widow hasn’t had her own film but certainly looms large in this story.  And I found myself wanting all the Avengers in this too.

KIM: And you have to stay through all the credits.  There are two credits scenes – one hallway through and the other at the very end.

RYAN: Yes that is always the case with Marvel and they give great clues and hints as to what’s coming up in the franchise.  And I don’t do spoilers but it’s so exciting I wanna talk about it!

KIM: I think Scarlet Johansson is gorgeous and a good actress.  She is drop dead.

RYAN: She plays Black Widow perfectly ad it’s not a simple role.  She has to be smart, sexy, funny, serious.  And this is the first non-Iron Man, stand-alone movie to really expertly balance the humor and action.

KIM: I enjoy so many heroes but Captain American was not one of my favorite characters but after this movie, he’s really taking off for me.  I love him in this and the chemistry between all the characters was wonderful.  Anthony Mackie was so so good!

RYAN: And the same with The Winter Soldier. I love Emily VanCamp on TV’s Revenge and was so excited to see her in this but she’s barely in it.  Still it’s cool to see in on the big screen in a major movie.  She has a couple good moments.  I hope to see more of her in the future.

KIM: Maybe she will be – you never know who they’ll bring back.  Robert Redford was great in this too – very fitting in the role.  I didn’t know too much going in but the action sequences were brilliant.  He doesn’t use guns or go for the kill.  He’s a good guy.

RYAN: Just a big man with a shield.  I love this character now after this movie too.  The effects in this movie really take it to the next level.  They’re so amazing and so realistic that you just sit there, totally taking it all for granted, believing, “Sure, he’s flying… that’s happening.”  Absolutely breathtaking effects.  Sam Jackson has such a cool action scene – there’s a crazy-cool scene in an elevator… so many outstanding, original and impressive action and effects moments.

KIM: The fight scenes were so well choreographed too.

RYAN: It’s such a winning film.  It’s everything you want from a blockbuster.

I am so happy to hear this. I have heard from other critics that it’s very good as well. But I don’t take them as serious as I take your reviews. I canNOT wait to go see this later today. I’m wasn’t a Captain America fan either until Chris Evans took over the role. However, it’s a lot about CA’s character that speaks to me…his leadership, compassion, and desire just to name a few. Thanks for the review and I’m so happy Blockbuster season is here (my favorite time of the year).

Capt America was a secondary superhero for me until this movie. Now he is one of my top favorite super heroes!!!
