The Longest Ride Review

Longest RideRYAN: This is the latest in the string of romantic dramas adapted from Nicholas Sparks novels and that gold standard is still The Notebook but this one’s pretty good.

CAROLINE: I love a good, sappy romantic drama. Did this one get you?

RYAN: I got choked up a couple times but never actually cried. You certainly begin to care about the characters and the casting is good but there are a few things to also be annoyed about in this film?

CAROLINE: Such as?

RYAN: It’s a bit long. And, like The Notebook, it covers two separate love stories – one in the past, one present day. They do interstect but not as cleverly as in The Notebook and this one really feels more like it should have been two different movies. I totally get how Sparks weaves the stories together and it’s cute, but it’s never better than cute.

CAROLINE: What was the whole bull riding thing like?

RYAN: It was cool, mildly suspenseful. The rider/leading man is played by Scott Eastwood – son of Clint and a flight attendant.

CAROLINE: (laughs) I wonder how he got in the biz.

RYAN: Exactly. He’s good. He’s hot and he’s fine for this role. You can totally see his father in him. I don’t mind him, but yes, it’s nepotism.

CAROLINE: Who’s the girl?

RYAN: Britt Robertson – I actually really like her. I watched her TV show The Secret Circle, where she played a witch. It didn’t last very long but I liked it. She actually has, like, 40 credits. And she’s in the upcoming Disney Tomorrowland movie which looks awesome. She’s really good and has never looked better. They’re both gorgeous. They have chemistry. And they both almost exclusively wear blue in this movie.

CAROLINE: So random.

RYAN: Yeah, when you start to notice it, it’s a problem. I really loved the beginning of the film, like the first twenty minutes, I noticed I was smiling at the screen. Then when the other storyline begins, all the drama sets in. The period part of the film is fine but aside from hair and costumes and film filter, you it’s not the best laid out period.

CAROLINE: Is it as cheesy as some of his other adapted movies?

RYAN: Yes it’s pretty cheesy but it’s also cute and adorable and there’s a sense of a wink to it all so I forgive its cheesiness. If you’re at all bitter and jaded about romance, though, this movie will make you puke.

CAROLINE: (laughs) Good to know.

RYAN: It’s really a beautiful and sweet movie that just completely lacks any edge. That’s ok. I enjoyed it very much but still found the pace and the switching between the two stories, although done with a story device, to be a bit awkward.
