The Drop Review

The DropRYAN: It’s James Gandolfini’s final film and it’s so bittersweet seeing him.  He’s so good but it’s such a loss.  In Enough Said last year, I didn’t think about that while watching the film but I couldn’t help thinking about it a bit during this one.

CAROLINE: It is so sad.  He was really great.  How is his performance in this?

RYAN: Excellent.  He’s a bit more Tony Soprano in this but also different.  And the movie is fantastic so it’s a nice way to honor him as his last film.  The story is brilliantly well developed.  It’s so well thought out.

CAROLINE: And it’s a great cast.  You have the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace in there too.

RYAN: Yes and Tom Hardy is one of my favorite actors. Seriously – this guy is so talented it’s like, “Who is he?!”  He is so different in every role and he’s one of those actors who changes his whole demeanor, voice, stance and all for each role.  I haven’t seen many interviews with him so I have no clue who he is but he’s a great actor.

CAROLINE: He has showed quite versatility in his career.

RYAN: Interestingly, this film is not particularly stylish or moody; but it is highly suspenseful and it just successfully builds all the way throughout. It’s more intense and layers unfold as it goes on.  I was really into it.

CAROLINE: I think I’d be into it too.  It sounds like a cool, smart movie.

RYAN: The characters are all really well written.  You really begin to care about them.

CAROLINE: That’s an important hook.

RYAN: It’s a drama but as the suspense builds it feels a lot more like a thriller.  One of the aspects that kept me feeling uneasy for much of the film was there’s dog in the film that’s abused.  You know I’m a total dog person and the pup looms large in the story.  I wan’t reveal what direction it all goes in but it just kept me invested.

CAROLINE: Honey, I totally get it.  It’s often harder to see that than all the human violence we’re so desensitized to as an audience.

RYAN: Exactly.  In fact, I was so nervous to the point of nausea at one point.

CAROLINE: I wouldn’t like that.

RYAN: There are a couple disturbing moments but it’s all part of the drama.  It’s a good film.  I could see it again.
