Sex Tape Review

SexTapeRYAN: I’d like to welcome Stacey and Shelley to the site for this review; two of my oldest friends.  We all grew up and went to school together and I think this is the first movie we’ve seen together in, like, 20 years.  I think seeing the movie with you, however, was the highlight of the film.  Sex Tape with Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel is somewhat fun and racy; but remarkably, it’s never sexy.

SHELLEY: It was racy but I thought it was more vulgar – the language.

RYAN: There’s so much talk about sex and it’s basically all about spicing up a marriage and their sex life, so if you’re a married couple whose lost the spark, this movie might be the funniest thing you’ll see but otherwise, it’s nothing spectacular.

STACEY: But even if you’re not married, I think it’s still funny.  I think it appeals to more than just married couples.

RYAN: It’s mostly about the couple’s sex life and also a bit about parenting.  It’s not that you have to identify with it to find it comedic, but the majority of the jokes in this film are about those topics. You’re both married with kids and I actually think one of the funniest scenes was when they’re talking with other parents about being parents.

SHELLEY: That was hilarious.  That was one of the funniest moments for sure.

RYAN: I liked the stunt casting of Rob Lowe.  He infamously has a sex tape scandal in his past, as a celebrity. He looks great and I think the only other scene I really liked in the film takes place in his character’s house.

STACEY: I agree.  That was really funny but he has a moment with a dog that completely reminded me of Steve Martin and the dog in Father of the Bride.  It’s basically the same thing.

SHELLEY: It’s totally the same – he’s snooping around, looking for something and gets chased by a dog.  It’s slapstick.  It’s funny.

STACEY: But Rob Lowe and Cameron share a good moment together during that scene when they’re hanging out.

RYAN: Jason lost so much weight for this movie – he actually looks hot.  And they’re both naked a lot. I like Cameron in comedies.  Whenever I see her in drama, she’s never good.  She’s, in fact, terrible, in the movie The Counselor. But thankfully, she’s in her comfort zone in this movie and she’s never looked better than as she does in the opening of this film.  I don’t know if it’s just the hair extensions but even her face looks flawless.  She looked younger and stunning.

SHELLEY: She’s so cute.

STACEY: I like her a lot.  I loved her in Charlie’s Angels. I agree she’s better funny.  Some of this reminded me a bit of Something About Mary.

SHELLEY: But that movie was hilarious; much funnier.  If you’re gonna make a movie about sex in a marriage, they really used it from an interesting perspective.  They refer to it in a vulgar way.  It’s never about making love.

RYAN: Oh I think it was.  I think they just used different vocabulary to define making love.  That’s just the way this couple relates to one another, and also, it’s part of “shock comedy,” by going to extreme lengths, as movies do, for laughs.  But the bad language is what becomes the buzz word and the romantic hook of the movie – or what’s intended to be the romantic hook of the film.  I think it completely failed to dazzle and have the effect they were going for, which is why this movie ultimately doesn’t work.  But that’s how their characters communicate.  It’s no “You complete me.” That’s for sure.

STACEY: I think it’s just a comedy.  I didn’t find it to be very romantic.  Maybe it’s the topic.  I didn’t get, “aw….” either.

RYAN:  It’s an ineffective rom com.

SHELLEY: I loved the couple who were their friends.

STACEY: Yes!

SHELLEY: It was fun. I burst out laughing a few times.  It’s maybe worth a matinee but not, like, one to see regularly.

STACEY: If my husband and I were paying for a babysitter, for a date night, I wouldn’t go see this.  There are better movies more worth your money out there.

RYAN: Yeah It’s about a couple’s love life but it’s a mad-cap, screwball comedy.  It’s fine.  It’s ridiculous but fun.

My wife, Victoria and I felt exactly as your review. Funny moments but still lacking. I think that how a movie ends is critical. A “feel good” ending to balance all the over the top humor may have helped.

This sounds like a good movie for the dead of winter when there is nothing else to do or watch….
