Horrible Bosses 2 Review

Horrible Bosses 2RYAN: It’s the sequel to Horrible Bosses, which we saw together and I was basically just hoping this wouldn’t follow the footsteps of The Hangover movies, which just kept repeating the same plot in sequels.  Thankfully, that’s not the case, this film features a new story which was very refreshing.

CAROLINE: That is a relief.  We thought the first one was ok.  We gave it a rental rating.  How’s this one in comparison?

RYAN: It’s actually better than the first.  They came up with a good story and the actors are so well suited to each character that it was really fun returning to them.  So so so much better than that other recent comedy sequel – Dumb and Dumber To.

CAROLINE: Wouldn’t anything be better than that though?

RYAN: (laughs) Yes.  This cast is so likable and the characters too – Jasons Bateman and Sudeikis and Charlie Day have such great chemistry as a trio, they’re like a modern day Three Stooges.  Each character well defined and they play off each other so well – it’s almost like they’re improvising but I read in EW they didn’t because the story was so tight.

CAROLINE: They’re all so great.  I especially love the Jasons.  How is Bateman still so hot?  Does he never age?  Is he a vampire?

RYAN: Yes. I laughed out loud during this a few times but was more often just smiling up at the screen.  It’s a nice mix of comedy that works and a plot that’s really well paced.  Timing is so important to comedy and this movie really moves.  I wasn’t bored for a second.

CAROLINE: How’s the rest of the cast?  There’s returning and new people too.

RYAN: Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston are so brilliant in these roles.  They’re great actors, yes, but this writing really deliciously lets them go places they just don’t in other roles and it’s delightful.  Especially Jen – she’s so naughty in this and it’s just hilarious seeing to go there.  The same can be said for Chris Pine.  I’ve never seen him play so slimy before and he’s fantastic.  You love to hate him.  As for Christoph Waltz, he’s great but it’s not really anything new for him.

CAROLINE: I can see that.  Maybe this was a bit of typecasting in his case.

RYAN: There are a couple running jokes throughout the film that are cute.  I really feel like I sit and look at or just watch comedies usually, as opposed to really getting into them.  I tend to feel more in a rom com than a straightforward comedy.  But this one really does a great job.

CAROLINE: I’m so glad you enjoyed it and it’s even better than the first.

RYAN: I’m just thrilled they did something new instead of resting on their laurels.  Quick, witty, smart, funny with a twist – It’s rare I enjoy a comedy this much.

I’m generally not into comedy (especially campy) but this sounds great. I look forward to seeing it.
