Gone Girl Review

Gone GirlRYAN: The screenplay for Gone Girl was adapted by the writer of the NY Times best-selling novel of the same title. And obviously the story is winning over audiences everywhere, and I think teaming with David Fincher to direct couldn’t be more perfect.

CAROLINE: I have been highly anticipating this movie, even once proclaiming that if I only saw one movie in the theater this fall, it would be Gone Girl. And thank God I did. It did not disappoint.

RYAN: I love how suspenseful, layered and complex this story is. I can only imagine what a page turner the book must be, though I did not read it. I’m actually glad of it because it made the movie that much more exciting.

CAROLINE: I, on the other hand, did read the book, so I didn’t have the same sense of suspense. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it, however. First of all, with one major exception, the movie is impeccably cast. I’m looking at you, Ben Affleck. He couldn’t have been a better choice for this role. Who knew?

RYAN: He’s so good in this. Apparently, there’s some Baffleck Jr. nudity happening, which I totally missed!!

CAROLINE: You did?? I totally saw it. It was a blink and you’ll miss it moment, and I guess you blinked!

RYAN: I liked Rosamund Pike. There’s something about her face that is devoid of emotion where you can’t tell what she’s thinking, which was perfect for this role.

CAROLINE: She was miscast if you ask me. I like her a lot as an actress and generally think she’s great, but her voice over sounded too haughty and patrician to me. The character of Amy is supposed to be an NYC cool girl, and I don’t think she captured that as well as another actress might have. But she did a great job in the role.

RYAN: I loved the supporting cast. NPH, obviously a winner. And let me see if I can say this without choking… Tyler Perry gives a really good performance in this movie.

CAROLINE: Right??? He was surprisingly great.

RYAN: Let’s hope he learned something from director David Fincher that will help his own directorial efforts.

CAROLINE: I seriously loved the girl who plays Ben’s twin sister. Not to mention to the always fabulous Casey Wilson, of course.

RYAN: And Missi Pyle as the Nancy Grace character. Everyone was so great.

CAROLINE: The tone and mood of the movie is perfect. It’s got the usual Fincher darkness, both literally and figuratively.

RYAN: I always have high expectations of style in a Fincher film, and this one doesn’t disappoint. We have to talk to about the scene that gave me nightmares.

CAROLINE: OMG totally – but without spoilers.

RYAN: I’ve never cried out of fear before in my life until this movie. I didn’t even know it was possible, but the moment was so unexpected. It was like The Shining! It was insane and I was beside myself. I felt like I needed to press pause and process it for 10 minutes before going back to the movie.

CAROLINE: I know exactly what you mean, though I was a little more prepared for it having read the book.

RYAN: Can you comment on any major changes from the book? There has been a lot of talk about how different the ending is.

CAROLINE: There was a lot of talk about that, but once people started seeing the movie, I think they realized it wasn’t that different. As will all move adaptations, it’s impossible to really capture the psychology behind each character like the book can. I think that’s the case here, and there are some minor differences, but nothing that will make anyone who loves the book angry.

RYAN: So what’s your overall opinion?

CAROLINE: I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and am so happy that it turned out well and relatively true to the book. I would have liked to see a different actress in the lead role, but I’ve wracked my brain and I can’t even think of who it should have been. Maybe a Gwyneth Paltrow type – though she wouldn’t have worked because then all I would have been thinking about was that she used to date Ben Affleck in real life.

RYAN: It’s as good as any David Fincher film, and I love that. I can’t wait to watch it again to see what more I can pick up in the story.

CAROLINE: I’m just so sad you missed Baffleck’s peen! You get a little butt crack and then a side shot of the goods. Look for it toward the end in the shower scene, people!
