Dolphin Tale 2 Review

Dolphin Tale 2RYAN: Soon as this movie started it reminded me of the first one in that it has the same sort of feeling to it.  There’s something very special about this dolphin, Winter, and her story.  It’s a true story and it has had such an inspiring affect on people, especially those who have lost limbs.

CAROLINE: I’ve heard it’s a very moving story.  I haven’t seen either of these as I’m not a big fan of the family genre. But how was this sequel?

RYAN: It’s good.  The whole cast returns, which is great.  It’s nice to see how the kids are growing up.  The first movie came out in 2011.  And then Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. are all back as well.

CAROLINE: Is this a good script?  Is there really another story to tell here?

RYAN: Yes this film, also, is based on the true continuing story of this dolphin, Winter, with the prothetic tale.  I’m sure some moments were dramatized but it’s the real, basic story.  And one of the things that really works here is the balance between the kids and the adults and the animals.  It’s mostly about the kids and animals but it’s not like the adults are just filler.  Unless you count all the filler in Ashley’s face. (laughs)

CAROLINE: Ouch (laughs) Does she look that bad?

RYAN: She’s clearly had some work done.  The animals are so key in this film and it’s amazing how well choreographed they are.  I wonder how long it took to get them to do all of these things for the cameras.  Truly amazing.  There are some beautiful shots underwater.

CAROLINE: I’ve always thought it was interesting when you hear about a dolphin’s brain and how similar they are to humans.

RYAN: I find it interesting how the people actually appear to have chemistry with the animals in the film.  And they’re not CGI.  It’s impressive.  There’s a real connection there.

CAROLINE: So you were really into it?  Do you think I’d like it?

RYAN: I do.  There’s been great buzz for this movie and for good reason.  It’s very sweet and kind and it really gets to you.  I felt happy tears well up a couple times.  I think you’d like that.  And it feels very real.  Even though it’s a scripted drama, it feels almost like you’re watching a documentary being filmed in the moment.  The creative team here did a great job building the story.  The climax of this film illicits the same feelings as, like, great sports films where it’s very rousing at the end.

CAROLINE: Nice.  I’m glad you enjoyed it.  I have a few years yet till my daughter is the age when I’ll have to see all of these movies.

RYAN: And you’ll like them in spite of yourself! (laughs) The footage at the end is real-life footage and it’s great to see that too.
